ST. CROIX — The widespread Takata airbag recall currently affecting the U.S., Japan and other countries, has hit the U.S. Virgin Islands particularly hard, with over 7,000 vehicles being affected by the recall, and the territory being designated as one of the U.S. jurisdictions with the highest priority recalls because of its tropical climate.

Call Vanessa at CAM right away. I'm sure her staff of expert techs can get them done soon.
Between parts shortages and the number of vehicles, they will be completed in 2019.

Generally speaking airbags can last the life of the vehicle. The "squib" or primer that causes the propellant to ignite for example can fail turning on the SRS (supplemental restraint system) light. The service tech scans the controller to determine what in the system has failed. There are crash sensors, the controller, and the clock spring just to name a few.
In the case of the Takata airbag the charge that deploys the airbag is sending shrapnel through the airbag and into the driver. Some people have been seriously injured and I believe some deaths have occurred. If it were not for this defect, airbags usually go to the junk yard when the car is scrapped.

This is such old news. I had the airbag in my Acura replaced 18 months ago.

Because the recall has continued to grow by the millions and has become so wide spread it will continue to be news. Territories like the VI.will receive parts at a snails pace.
