Other Cell phone options besides AT&T and Verizon on STX ??
Good Afternoon,
I have an AT&T stateside phone number, and it works great (and NO roaming charges) when I am on STX.
But....I am wondering what other options I have on STX for a stateside phone number that will NOT be roaming when there??
I know Verizon does charge roaming for a stateside number when on STX.
Any other options I can look into (with a stateside number)??
Thank you!!
Sprint, but why not keep stateside number? If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Trying to find a cheaper option to AT&T !! (I am on STX half the year ......hence the stateside number)
Does Sprint work well?
Do you have a local number or stateside number??
I have a stateside number. Same one I've had for 10+ years. Sprint.
Live on STT but visit St Croix at least once a year, and never had an issue, except when network was down island wide a few months ago.
I have stuck with Sprint all these years because they always offered unlimited plans.
My AT&T friends are reluctant to whip out their phones when we need to settle an issue using Google, so all eyes turn to me, and out comes my phone. I'm an information junkie so no way could I stay sane with a data limit.
Discontinued internet at home. Have phone modem plan as emergency back up, but never use it. That plan has limits.
I don't think Verizon is an option down here. I had Sprint for awhile and it sucked. There are local options still (I think?) but they all suck too. I have switched back to AT&T and have had no problems whatsoever. Even during hurricanes. No need to change the stateside number. No roaming, no nothing. Seamless.
IT
Looks like one vote in favor of Sprint, and one vote against Sprint!!
Anyone else out there with a stateside number with Sprint on STX??
What's your opinion??
Thank you!!
Service varies depending on location and phone. Most free phones have inferior antennas so service can be limited if you're not close to a tower. With my previous phone, I got signals when my Sprint friends didn't. My current phone doesn't seem to pick up in as many areas though it wasn't a freebie at the time.
Read reviews on signal strength before buying a phone and check tower maps.

I have unlimited data on AT&T.
I don't know what plans my friends have, but it drives me crazy that they have "smart phones" and only use them to make calls and take pictures.
And play games?
I don't think they even play games. Sad.
I have unlimited data on AT&T too, but have to pay for (unlimited) texting and have 450 anytime minutes, and free nights and weekends. I am not a big phone talker, but would really like unlimited minutes.
My dilemma is I don't want to give up the unlimited data....especially for when I am on STX !!
AT&T no longer offers unlimited data, so if I was to switch plans with them I would have to give up the unlimited data......
Guess I will stay with AT&T and keep the unlimited data plan......it just sucks to see all these plans advertised on the TV now for many lines and 10GB to share for not much more than I am paying now for a single line!!
Thanks everyone!!
I have a great $120 AT&T GoPhone and spend $60 a month for unlimited text and call and 2.5 giggawhatevers.
Go with Cricket! They were just bought out by AT&T so they are on their network and they are SUPER cheap. My husband and I have the phones and are looking into relocating to St. Croix. We were just in the Cricket store out here in California and they said if you set up your network in the continental US you can use your phone in the USVI. As of right now I don't think you can set up an account on the islands though.
We have had ATT since arriving on STX in 2008 and it works great and is seldom out of service. We have the 450 Anytime minutes with free weekends and evenings and free to calls to other ATT phones. We can call anywhere in the States, PR or the Virgin Islands.
$31.99 per month....and we pay $.20 for texts, which we don't often use.
Works well for us.
Have you looked at 'straight talk' from Walmart. We have it on my wife's iphone. It works on ATT network in St Croix and I think is $45 per month unlimited everything. I still use ATT but am paying twice as much. Just make sure you get the ATT network straight talk card. I think they Amy also have a tmobile network card.
This may be an old thread but definitely needs new info!!!
If Sprint works there then the best cell phone deal is sprints prepaid company "BOOST Mobile"! It will work wherever Sprint does but would definitely need to be setup stateside...
For $30/month I get unlimited talk/text/up to 5 GB hi-speed data, 4G LTE on the data growing plan. Starts at 1 GB but every 3 months pay bill on time get another 1/2 GB data added until maxing at 5 GB (currently up to 3 GB now).
Also, BOOST Mobile is the ONLY service where even when all data in your plan has been used it stays on unlimited just at 3g speeds!!!
Thanks but I'll stick to AT&T.
Had Sprint for awhile, switched to AT&T.
Happier with their services.
att has better coverage
I use this one. No monthly fees. Works great!

And...makes a great gift!
I have T-Mobile on the mainland; I'm about to relocate to St. Croix. When I was visiting a few weeks ago, I found that my phone provider flipped between T-Mobile, and Innovative VI. The difference was extreme. When my service was provided by T-Mobile, I had a 4G LTE connection. When it switched to Innovative, my connection dropped to 2G!
I used to have Sprint. They were, to put it mildly, disloyal to me after I'd been with them for nearly a decade. AT&T demanded a deposit that was more expensive that their top-of-the-line phones at the time. My preference is to not switch to either of these companies, and I don't think Innovative is going to fit my desires and needs.
Who's Next?
Verizon?
Verizon?
No. Huge roaming charges is what happens to Verizon customers.
