Opinions needed about my new car on STX
I bought a new car (Malibu Maxx) a couple months ago, it has just over 1,000 miles. I have read that roads aren't all that great eventhough they are paved. If my husband takes the job on STX, should we sell our car, and just take our 1996 Rodeo (4x4). My husband seems to think the Rodeo would be just fine, runs smoothly and such.
Is it worth it to make a $300 + car payment when we could just use the Rodeo?
Would it be worth it to ship the Rodeo? I know foreign cars cost more to ship. I think my husband had an estimate of $1200 from Florida. Who knows what all the taxes would add up to on the island. Should we just buy a car on the island?
Thanks for any input.
Susan
Check with your loan holder on the car - you may not be able to ship it out of the mainland with a lien against it. After all, if needed who could they send to repo it? This may decide the issue for you.
Actually, I already called the bank. They said it would just be a $40 charge to transfer the title to the VI.
thanks
Your Malibu would be fine for most roads under normal conditions. Just don't try driving it on the beach or dirt tracks. Most of the bad pot holes from last Novembers rains have been fixed on STX.
If you plan to live high up on a hill where the access road is not paved and is full of rocks and dirt then maybe not. Also if the driveway or access road to your home is extremly steep then you might want to think about it.

It is my understanding that the Rodeo is more expensive to ship due to the greater cubic footage not because it is a foreign made car. The import taxes however would be affected if it is non-U.S., however most Rodeos are made in the U.S. check your VIN# if the first number is 1,2,3 or 4 your Rodeo was made state side and would be no different than the Malibu. The road tax might change a bit for the Rodeo due to the fact that it is probably heavier than the Malibu.
