Operating Room Nurse
I've been reading your posts for a couple of months now as I am researching a possible relocation. I have booked my first trip this June.
I am an O.R. nurse and am interested in any opinions you all have with the hospital on St. Thomas, either as an employee or a patient.
Thank you, in advance, for your responses!
I had my eye operated on & was very impressed with the facility. Sure couldn't say the same 10-20 years ago where horror stories were the norm. Clean, very nice professional staff & generally an excellant experience. However, it cost 2-3 times what it would in the States or Puerto Rico so for the next operation I'll be going to Puerto Rico which I don't want to do.
I visited the Emergency Room in January and received good treatment.

I am a maternity nurse in a large NYC hospital...toured facilities at Schnieder Regional (STT) and found them to far exceed what we have here in NYC. Their birthing rooms, nurseries and NICU are all top notch. The hospital was cleaner than ours has ever been, even when the State comes to inspect. Talk about impressed, the food in the cafeteria was home cooked! I was offered a huge bonus to come on down! Retiring from the rat race next year at 62 and moving into our condo on Mahogany Run after that at least for 1/2 the year. Will probably go for lunch at the hospital cafeteria...LOL!

Hey....I spent 4 hours there and didn't get any home cooked meals (lol).

Thanks a bunch for your posts! I am excited to meet with the Director of Surgical Services when I get there in June and hopefully be able to check the place out. I live on a rural island in the Pacific Northwest (I can see Canada from my deck) and I am tired of being cold! I've sent two emails to the hospital's info address but have not heard back yet. I guess I'll just have to pick up the old-fashioned telephone!
It's a long holiday weekend. . .
I work at the hospital and it has been a positive experience so far. It is def much different than the states, but in positive as well as negative ways. I came from a large city hospital in Philadelphia and the amenities were far more advanced than here, but you get used to working with what you have! The best way to get in contact with pepole at the hospital is honestly to just call. Marci is the nurse recruiter and she is great. She can pretty much provide you with any info about the hospital or moving to the island. Good luck, PM me with more questions if you have any.
Thanks, kat! I live on a rural island in Washington State and we certainly make do with little here! I received a very positive reply from your recruiter today! She will be available during my first visit this June and I am looking forward to seeing the facility! What department do you work in?
That's good to know. My dtr has asthma and if she gets into crisis I would like to think I can rely on the ER there @ Schneider Regional.
Thanks for the advice, kat1128. I hope to relocate to the USVI with my 7y.o dtr one day. I have been a medical social worker(mostly hospitals) for 14 years. I hope to be able to secure employment in St. Thomas within my field, preferably at the hospital . I haven't had much luck with emailing different people inquring about jobs though. I guess it's like you said I'll have to get on the phone and call.
caribQ: On St Thomas, Dr Audria Thomas is *the* asthma doctor. Have you been for a visit? Come down for a short stay, go to the hospital and meet Leonilda Blake, the head of Social Services. She would at least be able to point you in the right direction. You are correct, e-mailing isnt going to get you much. Once you have met people in person, you may be able to follow up on the phone.
Hello EastEnder!!! Thanks for replying. No I haven't been down for a visit yet, but I am planning it as we write. Thanks for the contact for Social services. I will call her Monday. I will definitely make the rounds when I come down. Thanks again!!!
Monday is a holiday, so wait until Tuesday. Truthfully, don't hold your breath that you will get her on the phone. As I said, you will have to come down here and visit face to face, then you might get people to respond to phone calls.
BTW, Monday is Transfer Day. The government employees will all be off, as well as many other service folk. And this is in addition to the 3 days they had off last week from Maundy Thursday through Easter Monday. If you are dealing with government here, you need a calendar of holidays! 😉
Oh yeah ,East Ender. That's right! I for got about the holiday. Okay. When I get down there I'll definitely pound the pavement. I'm also not limited to just the hospital. I'm looking into other medical settings as well, even some non-medical. I saw your other post under "employment in Stt" and the list of other places in medical settings. That was great.
