Online stores that ship here?
Hello All,
I have been all over the island trying to find a couch but would like to expand my search online, are there any good alternatives to Pottery Barn that will ship to the VI? Also, I tried to buy a high quality thread count sheets from Overstock.com, but they don't ship here and advised me to use comerxia.com - but they don't seem to ship here either. Maybe I'm doing it wrong? Has anyone successfully used on of these companies or can advise on where to go for such homegoods online that will ship here? Thanks so much in advance!
Janelle
I have used The Company Store with great success and ease.
Yippee, my second favorite topic, shopping!
Janelle, I can provide a more comprehensive response later, but in brief:
Crate and Barrel--I have only regularly ordered household items from them, but I just discovered that they will also provide you a competitive shipping quote for their furniture. I will be ordering a coffee table and will let you know if I run into any snags.
Company Store--ditto East Ender
Overstock--Not only do they not ship to the VI, they also don't accept CCs with a VI billing address. I went through the complicated process of having my mom pay for some items, having them shipped to Florida and then forwarded to me through CaribTrans. At the end of the day I can say it wasn't really worth it. Read the reviews of this retailer on Epinions.com for further info.
Ebay--Not to be overlooked b/c it offers excellent variety and competitive prices. Many sellers already utilize USPS, and for those who don't, you can ususally contact and ask them to deliver by USPS.
CaribTrans--Not a retailer, but a freight forwarder in Miami. They receive your items and then ship on Thursday to Deliver it on STT. Once here, Deliver it calls you and you have to get the paperwork taken care of with Customs, then you pick up your goods. CaribTrans charges a transaction fee of $35 and a$2.37 per cubic foot. I just had my couch set (purchased on Ebay) delivered. Total cost was $365.
Good luck and feel free to email me if you would like addt'l info.
With respect to ordering things you want shipped here - that will not ship to the Virgin Islands - the Red Hook mail service now provides you to ship it to their address in North Carolina and they will forward it to you here.
It opens up the way to purchase anything online that ships stateside....opening up a wide range of possibilities.
I just got a new Epson Photo Printer which would NOT have been shipped to me here - meaning the order would not have even been taken. Ordered it shipped to NC as mentioned above and they forwarded it on to me.
What does the Red Hook mail service charge for that?
Doug
Only what it cost them to ship - which is through UPS - Priority Mail.
For those folks on St. Croix, VI Cargo is another freight forwarder that you can use. Just place the order with the vendor of your choice and have them ship it to the VI Cargo office in Miami. (Ask the shipper to include a copy of the invoice with the shipment as it is needed to clear customs.) VI Cargo will transport it to STX and clear it through customs., then notify you that it is ready to be picked up. There is no need to set up an account or even notify VI Cargo that you will be using their services.
The shipping charge for most orders is $2.45 per cubic foot (cement, tile and other heavy items are charged differently). They have also just imposed a $0.25 per cubic foot fuel surcharge. (Cubic footage can be determined by measuring length times width times height, divided by 1728. )
In addition to the shipping costs, they charge $15 to clear a bill of lading for shipments that are under 20 cubic feet, and there is an additional $40.00 documentation and handling fee for shipments over 20 cubic feet.
Remember that any order over $1000 is subject to the 4.2% excise tax on any invoice amount that exceeds $1000.
All the info you need is on the VI Cargo website at http://www.vicargo.com

Amazon.com (love them!) will also ship here. They are partners with Target (who has 300-count 100% cotton sheets), so you can get stuff sent priority mail.
They also have partners in other areas- I ordered some sugarfree chocolate via a partner on their food site (was in beta then, still might be now), and it got here fast and unscathed.
An interesting thread might be a "don't waste your time" list- who WON'T ship here (or to a P.O. box)?
Here's my short list:
Martha Stewart
Vans
Vosges (and a lot of other gourmet retailers)
I second Onika's eBay suggestion- but, like she said, be sure to emphasize that you want USPS! FedEx and UPS are such a pain. A friend stateside hadn't a clue, and "overnighted" (via an unnamed provider) a gift certificate to me for my birthday. Mind you, this was from ONE END of the island to the OTHER. It took 3 weeks.
One of the absolute lifesavers for us has been having a corporate USPS Express mail account- USPS will go pick up the package from your shipper, it has tracking, and it takes 1-3 days. Awesome.
Great topic!

Just want to confirm that these sites ship to PO boxes. Just bought a conod at Mahogany Run that I am trying to furnish. Hoping to get items on line to round out options on island.
I can't believe with all of the options for varying types of furniture, you couldn't find a couch here. If you truely can't, I'm sure one could be ordered for you. With the new Rooms to Go and the existing, Cloth Horse, Silk Greenery, Nutmeg Designs and a myriad of others, how come?
Ronnie
PS I even noticed that the quality of furniture at the Furniture Inn has improved with the coming of Rooms to Go.
Sears will not ship here as they have contracts only with UPS
Hey Ronnie,
We've found some great couches here, but they just don't tie in with our house very well. The house is a very "Hugh Hefner, 1960s kinda cool" - so much of the furniture we found here is too traditional (Rooms to Go especially). We want some sleek and modern, but with an island flare. So, as you can see, we're awfully picky about what we want. Cloth Horse had some options for us, but was a little more $$ than we want to spend right now. I haven't heard of Nutmeg Designs? Where is that located?
Thanks everyone! I didn't know Amazon had expanded so much!
Janelle
Nutmeg Designs is on the road to the airport, right past Nisky Center, the next stoplight, take a right. It's in the new building right there as you turn right.
