On island vs Off island furniture purchase
We've bought furniture and appliances from several places on STX, including Carlos - who gave us a great price on a new gas stove last year, and I was happy with the entire process.
We've also had a few pieces custom made and like them as well.
No complaints about any experience we've had. I can say that I flew back to STX from Miami about six months ago and found myself sitting next to one of the owners of one of the "Arab" stores - he was quite nice, we had a lovely conversation.
Personally I wouldn't order pricey furniture from the states unless I was sure it would last. Things tend to rot so much more quickly in the tropics. Well-made furniture is always worth the money - as are antiques and second-hand items which are easily found around both islands. Also if you think you might move off island to the states at some point consider the cost of shipping back any quality pieces you want to keep - we decided to not ship anything and just sell our furniture with our house because shipping it back cost more than buying new.
What island, OT?
It seems as if the STT experiences are very different than on STX.
I'm on STT. Why do you say they seem very different?
All the bad experiences posted are from STT, all of the good ones are from STX.
Haven't you noticed?
Seems like a tiny sample from which to reach any conclusion!

One of the most ironic statements I've read all day. People draw conclusions here all the time about STX based upon a few statements.
Yes, just like Alana decided to disparage an entire people from a few bad experiences.

I don't. I visited STX many times in past years and still have several friends over there. I really enjoyed my visits and the difference between the two islands. I've never disparaged STX at all and only come to the defense occasionally when somebody makes negative comments about STT which are based on lack of knowledge.
As far as this thread is concerned, I was curious as to why the statement was made where buying furniture was concerned. The only "bad experiences" I saw had less to do with furniture than the rather sad slide into furniture store owners and their ethnicity.

I don't think I mentioned you specifically?

Which you took entirely out of context. The thread is (and the comment was) about purchasing furniture not anyone's general perception of St Croix. If that's a subject which you feel needs reviving you can always start a new thread.

True, but I didn't start the sidebar conversation about whether it was relevant or not that it seems most of the people complaining about furniture are on STT in this discussion. I just commented that the statement about small sample size being used for a larger generalization was ironic. It wasn't out of context for the sidebar conversation.
And no, my comment on your statement being ironic wasn't about you. It was ironic for other postings in this discussion about furniture. (See I know where the bold button is too!)
I too had some bad bad bad experiences with some of the furniture places "Arab" run. I don't dig the term I guess - not really knowing their nationality. I'm not going to mention who but I bought a "new" mattress, got it home and unwrapped it and it had bed big stains one one side corner. I FREAKED out and threw it down to the first floor on the lawn. Made them come pick it up immediately. They were understanding and did refund my money luckily only took a week but insisted that they don't buy "recovered" mattresses. Clearly they do. I also do think the furniture is cheaply made it at least the few I looked at.
I will say that after that I went to Carlos furniture and he helped me with a NEW mattress $200 more of course but always friendly.
To OP: I'd just buy here. I got a nice set - couch and loveseat for $900 at the rent to own place in bovoni. It wasn't used at all just a display. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE silk greenery but come on, who can afford that? Well some I guess but not this snorkel guide lol. My set is holding up perfectly - no mold or anything.
I have had fantastic experiences with:
Best Furniture
Oscar Furniture
Patalidis Furniture
I have had awful experiences with shipping Pottery Barn down to STX (not the fault of the shipper)
