Officially making the move to STT 10/8
Hey everyone! Just wanted to say thanks for all the info I have found on this board. Althought I don't post often I do read everyday and it's really great that I have learned so much. Anyways, I start my job at the Ritz Carlton as a cook on October 15th. I will be moving down on October 8th to give myself some time to get situated before I start work. I have to get my cable set up, phone set up, internet (prefer dial up because it cheaper), bank account, grocery shopping, and also explore the area in which I will live. I am moving down without a car but everyone I have spoken to has said that its not that bad due to the safari as well as everyone giving everyone rides. I got my 1 bedroom apartment in Smith Bay all set thanks to STTResident and will be working at the Ritz as I said so we will see how transportation ends up working out. Well there it all is...just wanted to let everyone know I will be moving down and say thanks for all the information on this board. Also I am 20 years old so if anyone around that age wants to hang out once I get down, let me know. Thanks again!

I am possibly moving down to STT in February for a 3 to 6 month period. I am interested in culinary school and was hoping to get some experience in some capacity while on the island (coming to the island with a travel nurse). How did you get your job with the Ritz? Have you worked in the states for them? What is the best way to look for a food service job on the island before actually arriving? or any other temporary job for that matter? i am interested in advancing my scuba certification as well. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Russell
Welcome, ChefChaz! I can't wait for the fabulous Ritz Sunday Brunch to resume...
Hey Russell,
I have an associates degree in culinary arts from the Culinary Institute of America as well as industry experience. I have worked at the Garden City Hotel in Long Island since I have graduated which is a 4star 5 diamond hotel. So between the schooling and experience, that is what led me to able to get this job. As for finding it, I went onto the Ritz Carlton employment website and saw that they were looking for kitchen staff so I sent in an application along with my resume and cover letter. Everything was done through the phone and about 3 weeks later I got the job offer. I don't know much about other industries so I couldn't help you on other temp jobs. As for the Ritz, their cook and chef positions are all full time positions and require previous experience. I think your best bet would probably be to work at a private owned restaurant on the island and let them know that you are thinking about going to culinary school and would like the experience...that is what I did before I went to the CI of A. For something like that I am guessing you would probably need to be on island but who knows...you could get lucky. Hope this helps and if you have any more questions, just let me know.
Also, Jules....I can't wait to work the brunch at the Ritz. At the hotel I just worked at the Sunday Brunch got rated #1 in Long Island by Zagat Survey. So I am no stranger to the Sunday Brunch, I am a big fan. Talk to you soon.
