nursing
wanting to find traveling nurses that have traveled to and worked at the island hosptials,. am thinking of traveling over but want to know a little about the hospital and did you like it.
Cassidy: Have you asked the traveling company to provide you with some names? The traveling community has a strong network for housing, car rentals, etc. and I am sure they must give feedback re: the placement.
Cassidy,
I would suggest you contact Marlene Adams,Director of Human Resources for the dept of Health and the hospital. The other person who may be helpful is Geralda
Williams,Nurse Recruiter-she is based at the hospital. (St. Thomas) If you have not contacted these persons already.
Also, please send me an email directly with the topics you would like to know about in terms of nursing in St. Thomas. I have a contact that is a nurse at the St. Thomas hospital, she has answered questions for temp. nurses and traveling nurses before. I will then send your email to her, and she will email you back directly.

I am a nurse interested in working in the islands. I've called nurse recruiter in St. Croix without a return call. Is this the general response?
Cassidy, have you discovered any other information that might be useful? What type of nursing background do you have?
Hello Sharon,
You can try contacting the St. Thomas people that I mentioned a couple post up. Or St. Croix has a web site at http://www.jflusvi.org
You not getting called back is normal. As sad as that sounds. Calling government offices and leaving messages almost surely means you won't get called back. I remember I called last summer to an office and asked a question and was told, I don;t know the answer, I just work here. I said OK, can I leave a message for someone who will know the answer - she said No, just call back until you get ahold of that person.
So, I expect not to be called back. I would suggest you just keep calling, best to call in the am.
Good Luck.

I work for a local VI television station and just finished production on a commercial detailing how "the Virgin Islands desperately need nurses". So I know that there is demand for skilled nurses.
The spot has not aired yet and the hospital in STX is currently experience a budget crunch, so I don't know what the financial situation would be to relocate here. Keep trying to get ahold of someone. I'm sorry I don't have any contact info, I only speak to media relations people, and I doubt they would be much help.

J,
I've been a nurse forever so I'm accustomed to budget cuts and crunches.........everyone wants quality care but no one wants to pay. I will continue to pursue the job possibility.
Besides the hospitals (which are government owned) there are other government nursing jobs- especially in the schools. There are private facilities also- drs offices, a skilled nursing facility and home health agency. The problem with most jobs is that you actually have to be here to get them. If you come for a longish visit, look around etc., you will find something!!!
Thanks East Ender, I understand what you're saying about being there in order to get a job but my husband REALLY wants to move there. He plans to set up a business and let that be our souce of income.........eventually. I said no way unless one of us has a job that will cover benefits. You should know we're not spring chickens but neither of us are ready to lay down and die either. I like the safety net of insurance and steady income.
We have too many things up in the air right now to make the move, our first goal is to sell our house. Anyone want to buy a really nice house in a tourist area........Williamsburg, VA?? If that happens quickly, I'll probably just contact an agency that staffs in the Virgin Islands and that will give me a ready income and security I need to move. My husband has a couple of possibilities also although the wheels move slowly.
A travel job would give you the 6 months you would need to find something, too! Good work!
