Nurse Relocating
I am considering a short term (3-6 month) job in St. Thomas as a nurse. I would like some advice on close/safe housing near the hospital (and near the water, of course) or short distance to get bus service to work. Does anyone know good US nursing travel agencies that place nurses in St. Thomas or St. John. Do I need a car? Thank you for any advice you can offer, much appreciated.
Sorry to tell you but the hospital is not near water.
I have a good friend who is NICU RN currently on assignment in STT. PM me with your contact info and I'm sure she'll hook you up with her agency. They put her up in Sapphire Village which is a favorite place of mine on STT, although not too close to the hospital.

There are Safari and regular buses that run from the East End/Red Hook into town so you can probably get away with not having a car as long as one doesn't mind schlepping groceries, etc. by bus and being completely dependent on getting everyhere by safari or local bus service which does not run late evenings. The regular buses, I am not sure have regular, on time schedules.
There are usually a number of contract nurses staying at Sapphire Village; some of them have cars and some don't but they get to know each other and work out the transportation issues while for day shifts the safaris work well.
A nursing recruiter mentioned Sapphire Village, how far is that from the hospital? What is the best area to live that is nearest the hospital?
Sapphire is about a 20 minute drive from the hospital (remember our speed limit is max 35MPH!) and is one of the most beautiful beaches on St Thomas. On the East end of the island it's a five minute drive into Red Hook with its restaurants, bars, nightlife and the Red Hook ferry terminal for inter-island trips, on the safari bus route and regular bus route, and easily accessible.

Nothing is really too far from anywhere on a small island but I hosted many of the contract nurses staying at Sapphire at my nearby restaurant (closed last year after 16 years) and all of them loved living there for all the reasons listed above. Several of the nurses returned again and again over the years to do their 3-6 month stints. Hope it works out for you.
Thanks for all the info. I will look into Sapphire - sounds great!!!
Will you have access to a car? The Safari buses are not a good oppition to/from RSH if you are working late shifts. Or if you intend on experiencing the island outside of Red Hook / Downtown / Tutu.
Was hoping to do this without a car but looks like it will be necessary. Travel company says not necessary, that I can just use Safari, however, looks like evening and/or night shifts could be a problem. I can rent a car or maybe share a rental with someone. Thanks.
The safaris pretty much stop running after dark (which is early here) but coming off a late shift you won't have a problem finding a taxi to take you back home and, if staying at Sapphire, figure on $15 including tip. As I mentioned earlier, many of the nurses work it out to share a rental and it doesn't seen as though it's ever been a major issue. Having a car at your disposal does make everything so much easier, though. Have fun planning!

I have an RN friend that just moved there last month. The shifts for RNs are 7 AM to 7:30 PM or 7PM to 7:30 AM. Then since they do 40 hour work weeks you work 3, 12 hour shifts one week and the next week you work 3, 12 hour shifts and one 8 hour.
Anyway my friend is on the day shift and he said getting to work is a breeze on the safari buses but coming home is quite hard. He has to find a ride or pay for a cab. He is in the process of looking for a car right now.
we have a cottage by the beach and is on the safari run to the hospital.
