November 2014 Free Flu Shot Vaccinations Schedule - All Islands
Isn't citing Mercola basically "appeal to authority" fallacy? Forgive me if I'm wrong. Been a long time since philosophy 101
only if in citing him it was metioned that "look at what Mercola said" or "since mercola said this, it is true"
those statements would be "appeal to authority" if the data offered was cited as something is true because it came from mercola.
this isn't a philosophy it is logic (or rather, critical thinking). I am more than willing to accept that the data offered is un-true, but that fact would have to be established by citing counter data (not mentioning the source scientifically, rather WHAT the source is talking about).
I'm sorry I'm still laughing at "take it and stick it (under a coconut tree)" and the quick escalation of this thread. Love the strong, intelligent personalities on this board….But now even more confused about whether my mom (cancer patient) should get the flu shot this year. She had one stateside last year and didn't get sick.
Is there a lot of flu going around the islands in the winter even though the weather is lovely?
It seems fairly certain that since flu shots do not immunize against the strains that are "live" the year the shots are given (information admitted by doctors, the CDC and WHO etc...) that correlation does not equate to causation ( an example: if you put your seat belt on and do not get into an automobile collision you cannot say that "because I wore my seat belt I did not get into an accident", the same would go for your mom's situation).
My personal research has led me to believe (notice I am NOT stating a fact, just what I have found to be true) that vaccines weaken the immune system and are not needed, especially in "at risk" individuals.
I would advise you to look into this your self, or have your mother do that for her self as I am not a doctor and cannot give concrete advice on this (that is not to say that doctors "know everything" my mom was in the medical field and was the one who started me on this path of "questioning" if that's any consolation.
depending on the type of cancer and treatment already on-going I would have some advice (that you would have to sure the info is vetted) but not knowing the particulars of your mothers situation I cannot say much more. I lost a few family members to cancer and can understand (somewhat) the situation you are in, best of luck!
Check with your doctor as your mom already has a compromised immune system it may be helpful in protecting her. If she's had flu shots previously with no ill effects, then probably better to have than not. We always made sure my mom got them due to her compromised immune system.
We do get the flu here in the VI as let's not forget because the weather is great, our vacation guests can and do bring different strains from the states while visiting and escaping from their cold winter weather.
Yes, Petra, we thank out visitors for bringing in and leaving behind their wintertime ailments! The most common right now is a nasty bronchitis-type bug which lots of people are coming down with. I haven't contracted 'flu or anything else for many years but got zapped with this one!
Flu vaccines that do not match in any one year protects those vaccinated in future years. So there is cumulative benefit to getting one yearly. And the H1N1 doesn't fluctuate from year to year from what I understand.
I notice there is no mention of the graph of small pox. Before vaccines, small pox killed millions. An international vaccination program eradicated it. So the bottom of that graph is zero.
Liquid Fluoride, if you oppose vaccines, don't vaccinate. Or should I say, don't vaccinate anymore. You were probably already vaccinated as a child and never got polio, measles, or mumps. But if you don't want any adult vaccines, let it go. Live and let live.
I didn't notice the chicken pox graph. My doctor says that chicken pox is(was) the most contagious disease in the world.
So, like gay marriage, if you oppose it, don't do it.
If you oppose drinking alcohol, or eating sugar, don't do it.
Thanks for the info Beach Comber. I will be there and bring my parents and my children.
I hope they have the nasal spray because I prefer that to the shot.

That's the opposite of how vaccines work. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccine :
"A vaccine is a biological preparation that improves immunity to a particular disease. A vaccine typically contains an agent that resembles a disease-causing microorganism and is often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins or one of its surface proteins. The agent stimulates the body's immune system to recognize the agent as foreign, destroy it, and keep a record of it, so that the immune system can more easily recognize and destroy any of these microorganisms that it later encounters."
The annual flu vaccine can weaken children's resistance to other types of influenza virus, including those that could cause a pandemic, according to a study published in the November issue of the Journal of Virology.

Side effects of the smallpox vaccine include gangrene, skin diseases, scleroderma, smallpox, encephalitis, liver, spleen, pancreas and kidney disorders, coronary artery disease, herpes, polio and AID-like symptoms. Dr. Donald Henderson stated the side effects of the smallpox vaccine are worse than for any other vaccine.
The military anthrax vaccine program was abandoned when air force pilots quit in large numbers. Some stated their lives were ruined by the side effects of that vaccine.

Times change, we learn more.. vaccines have a place I'm sure, I vaccinate my dogs against parvo religiously, it works and its worth the risk.
I have never had a vaccine in my life, luckily my mother was a nurse practitioner and learned quite a bit by the time she had me; I have also made it through 15 years in the military and two deployments with no needles.
