Notarized Bill of Sale for Vehicle

The adventure in shipping my vehicle.

Ok, I didn’t know and didn’t see it written anywhere so let me help someone else out. My shipping company (one that is very well recommended on all these sites) just informed me that in order for them to process my vehicle through customs they would need my bill of sale “notarized”. My vehicle of course is now in STT and I’m just 10 days from getting there myself.

A bit of background. Vehicle VIN starts with a “1”, is a 2002, they have the original title that is in my name, Bill of Sale (not notarized), insurance is with USAA, but I did purchase the vehicle only 6 months ago.

So I had to scramble to try and find the out of town seller, who could have moved, been on vacation, or even dearly departed by now. Luckily somehow I still had his text from 6 months ago (no idea how but thank you iPhone) and was able to make contact with him. After arranging to meet him after work and get a new bill of sale notarized, I was able to get it to FED X and it should be there in 2 days (for a cost mind you).

Anyway, I don’t know if this is the norm or not. The shipping company was going to call customs and find out and then get back to me (didn’t happen as of yet). I figured I would call customs tomorrow and ask them myself but wanted to instead try to find the previous owner first.

Most of the sites say that a bill of sale is needed for a “new purchase”. So if you provide one, I suggest you get it notarized to avoid any hassles.

Seems over the top. In NC we pay property tax on vehicles every year, the state simply uses some standard valuations for everything. I don't know if they come from KBB or what. They can be appealed but I think they are usually on the low side.

It's more than a little odd that they would require a notarized bill of sale when you've owned the vehicle for months and it's titled and insured in your name. It makes no sense at all.

Makes no sense. I have shipped both ways without a bill of sale.

Yeah, well it didn't make sense to me neither but I just figured I needed to get the job done no matter what it took. My wife and I just think this and another incident just yesterday just want to make sure we have a lot of patience and humor. Just going with the flow ya know.

There are actually enough tests for patience and humor here in regular everyday living - there is no need for newly invented ones that may have no basis in the reality of bringing your car.
You did the right thing though - Oh? You need a notarized bill of sale ? Sure, I will Fedex down in the morning.!!!! No problem man.

Did you produce a clear title for the vehicle, if not then I could see where the Bill of Sale would be a requirement and notarized of course.
