Noseeum question
Hi All,
Question for you regarding noseeums:
While looking at house for sale in Nazareth over the weekend, I was attacked (I think) by noseeums. We visited with the homeowner outside on her patio into the early evening. I felt like I was being bitten by something, and by the time I got to my car my ankles were itching badly. My ankles and feet are now in pretty bad shape. I have what looks like a bright red rash and raised bumps that itch like crazy all over both ankles and feet. I have been applying cortisone cream liberally every few hours, which does help.
Here are my questions:
I have only experienced problems with noseeums while on the beach. Was this likely a noseeum attack or could this have been something else? Are noseeums a problem around homes in certain areas as well? If so, are they a problem year round and is there anything that can be done to control them?
We would probably not be interested in purchasing this house if we are going to have problems with noseeums while sitting outside on our patio, therefore I would appreciate any feedback.
all the biting bugs are out in force a couple days after heavy rains, as that is when they hatch. Some places have more standing water and brushy areas than others and have a higher concentration of noseeums and mosquitos in those prime hatching conditions.
Thank you for the info Alexandra,
Hope you are having a WONDERFUL time on your big sailing adventure 🙂 🙂 :)!

Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil is REALLY good at preventing noseeum attacks (and smells good too). The little critters love to bite me and when I wear the skin so soft, incredibly enough, they don't bite!! There is an Avon rep allegedly on STX though I've never been able to find them... Don't know about STT though. I always stock up on it when on the mainland or get friends up there to send it down.
Yes stxem, there IS a Santa Claus...er, I mean, Avon lady on St. Croix. 😀
Her name is Jackie and her phone number is: (340) 773-9366. I don't know where she lives on the island but she drops off brochures and orders at Monique's Hair Salon (at Coakley Bay condos, east end of STX).
Mell - you may recall my previous posts entitled "Bug Bites" where we discussed the fact that I seem to get eaten alive here, while others around me are completely ignored by no-seeums. I ended up buying Avon's Skin-so-soft Bug Guard Plus IR3535 insect repellant. (tu) It's an unscented spray (so if you're going out to eat you don't have a perfumed cloud hanging over you) plus it has an SPF of 15. No-seeums are listed on the spray can along with mosquitos, deer ticks, sand flies, etc. This stuff works great for me... as long as I remember to spray myself before heading out in the late afternoon/evening.
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the input and advice :).
I am still wondering if I should cross the home in Nazareth off my list, however. It is one thing to deal with noseeums occasionally, but quite another to have to deal with them daily in your own home..............................
try dropping by that neighborhood a few more times and maybe even chat with a couple of neighbors to ask if the noseeums are an all the time problem or just an occasional nuisance.
I own a home on port lane in nazareth... feel free to pm me w/ questions
Hi lip,
Thanks. Will do.
