North vs. East in STT
I need some clarification on living in the North vs. East end. My perception is that the North side is a little cooler, gets more rain and has more vegetation. Since I was told the North gets more rain-does it tend to get humid with a high mosquito population? I have been to the North side of the island-it felt a little cooler but I didn't notice higher humidity.
Ideally, I would like a one bedroom cottage or small house for $700-$900. Are there houses for rent on the East end or are they mostly on the North side? Do one bedroom cottages/house exist for that price?
Thanks in advance.
Shawn
Hello Shawn,
The northside of St. Thomas is on a higher elevation, usually cooler, more trees, more humidity... some folks have said they get mold in the closet and dampness in paper/cardboard products. Mosquitos - they get everywhere 🙂 East End has both commercial and residential - a more busy feel to it in my opinion... its also in a lower lying area.... driveways won't be as steep on the east end and you will be close to shopping but then on the northside you get some incrediable views because you are up on the mountain... give and take depends on what you want.
You will likely find an apartment as part of a house for the price range you are looking at. Houses by themselves are usually more. You might find a cottage or small house but there aren't a whole lot of them...

Islander,
With an 8-year old son that needs to go to school, in the east end, are there "safe" neighborhood areas for children to live...as I read the crime rate is high??? And, during hurricane weather, what part of the island is safest--or where are the shelters?
I love this message board...it gets me ready to move!
East End, where I have lived for (can you believe it 9 months already!!!!) would be my choice for the reasons given by Islander. With respect to crime - as I have posted before, there is crime in every city you might be from or want to go to.........the smart person will easily recognize areas that would not be suitable for them with respect to "things" with which they would choose not to be involved.
Vicki: The area near Montessori is pretty safe, in terms of crime and hurricanes! You should ask how the building you are going to live in fared in Hugo and Marilyn. Look at the construction- thick walls? Hurricane clips on the roof? A "safe room" (usually an interior bathroom)? Shutters? If you decide to move, just ask everyone's advice- they will have plenty for you! If your home isn't safe, you could go to a shelter, but I wouldn't recommend it! Probably you would go to a neighbor's or a friend's.
