Hi Everyone.

I'm looking for a new copy of John Lorenzo Anderson's "Night of the Silent Drums" to give as a gift. I've checked Dockside Books and a number of shops downtown and in Havensight but haven't had any luck. I know the publisher of my copy, Mapes Monde, no longer exists since the death of owner Michael Paiewonsky in 2004. Has anyone seen a store on STT with copies still available?

Thanks.

Is Hemingway's in Red Hook still in business? You might check there. Per Google, St. John Spice has it on their website.

Hey Trade.

Hemingway's phone has been disconnected for awhile so I think they're gone. The St. John Spice website claims the book is available in limited quantities but they don't have any in stock.

Thanks for trying.

Aw, heck. It's been a while since I've been to Red Hook & she looked pretty empty so I was afraid it was gone. Too bad.

How about trying the NP Visitor Center on St. John?

You can get it as low as 75 cents (used in acceptable condition) at Amazon.com...new for $8.95, they have several offerings. That's where I bookshop. Also try Alibris.com for special order and out-of-print books.

I've checked with the NP Visitor Center on STJ and was told they've been out of copies for awhile. I'd hoped to find the book locally so I could be sure it's new but I may have to resort to purchasing it online. Thanks.

I've always had trouble buying from sellers on the Amazon site (except for when Amazon itself is offering something I want to buy.) I've never had any luck. Never found one to mail here. Glad you had better luck, Poohwear. Usually no problem at ebay, though. Note I said usually. 🙂

Hey EE.

I called A.H.Rise and they said they'd sold out awhile ago.

FYI--if you buy from the Amazon Marketplace they tend to use media mail so it would not reach here for at least 6 weeks unless you made other arrangements with the seller. Also, be sure to check the sellers shipping rate page, it will tell you if they only do Cont. US or if they include territories and protectorates. The good news is that they typically respond quickly if you send a question thru Amazon to the seller--goof for inquiring as to condition or shipping policies.

you guys crack me up. "You've GOT to come out east" lol

Sounds like mainlanders from Boston on the phone with their distant relations in Oregon who only manage to fly out for a visit every 3-5 years. And of course, the Bostonians usually don't fly west, either.

The islands have really got the lock on living within a small sphere and not venturing very far.

On STX, it's Christiansted and Frederiksted that often don't mix and isolate themselves to their respective zones of the island. STT apparently has some similar areas that don't mix and mingle.

You've got that right, Alexandra! Every time I'm going to head out there on my day off it starts raining & after being stuck on Donkey Hill once it has to be a VERY dry day with no clouds in the sky. I even get my mail at Red Hook Mail Services but my cleaning lady picks it up for me weekly. Pitiful, I know.

Used to go much more often to take the ferry to STJ for lunch & a wander around Cruz Bay but haven't done that with all the construction & the parking issues. That's settling down now though. Just have to plan it so EE isn't anywhere around ready to burst into song though. 🙂
