New Year Thought

We all love the VI. The life style, the people, the weather, the water, the beach etc. But it does have some problems, and they are not going away, as much as we would like them to go away. Here is some simple math regarding our murder rate.

NYC will close out the year with about 470 murders. (FYI, the number for last year was about 590, so it is DOWN.) The legal population is about 20,000,000. (That does not include the people who commute into NYC) This equals a rate of .000023 murders per resident. Now lets us look at the murder rate for the VI. There are about 120,000 LEGAL residents in the VI. Lets say the number of murders will be around 50. That equals a murder rate for the VI of .004167 per person. This says that you have a .4% chance of being killed here in the VI. Almost 1/2 of 1%! It also says the murder rate is the VI is 182 times the NYC rate. To get to the same rate as NYC we would need have 3 murders to be committed!

Now NYC does not have the best murder rate, nor is it the worst. Some cities are about twice as bad and some are much better. And on the other side there are towns with 120,000 that have no murders at all, or just one or two.

It is interesting to play with numbers. And every situation is different. We are by far not as good as other locations or as good as we could be. They serve as indicators, and are not absolutes. Now I have not done the same calculations for rapes or attempted murders or robberies. But it is reasonable to assume that these numbers would exceed the main land rates also.

So this is just a thought for the New Year. So try not to be a statistic.

So have a great and Safe New Year!

Bill:

Sorry, but your numbers are wrong.

50 divided by 120,000 = .0004166 (or 4 hundredths of one percent).

The population of the entire State of New York is 19,413,000 (2008).

NYC (All boroughs) population: 8,364,000 (2008).

Bill, your statistics are making it sound like all "murders" in the VI are random in nature and this is not the case.

No don't do that. Life in the VI is worth all of the dangers. The lesson is to always lookout and make sure that you are not in a place and a time that will result in no good. If it feels wrong get out of there. You will never be able to prevent that shot that goes one mile and hits you but you can avoid being in a bar at 3am and flashing a lot of cash and looking for a ride and......!

Billd,I won't relocate until this year. I think the only way off once we are there ,is in a pine box. I am well versed in the security field.

As a side note, I believe the chance of having lung problems and stress are much higher in NYC than here 🙂

Of course it would be nice if the crime could be stopped. Maybe we should just ship all the criminals away (yeah right) or maybe the judicial system should change. Or maybe better yet, the school system could be upgraded so that everyone has a great education (not just private schools) ,then maybe the chances of a kid trying to do something better than rob people would increase. But of course that would involve the government actually making a decision and sticking with it.

Everyone just be smart and try to do what you can to change the problems in the VI. Then maybe one day the island wont be a bad statistic like it is now.

I don't think so, but after you have been in office awhile, you should be.

Someone said watch where you are. What about the guy who was going home for lunch and was attacked at his home? or the woman who was at home and someone broke in and beat her? The thing that scares me about the crime is how close it is to where I live and go every day.
