New Wyndham Resort on STX

I have been reading about the new resort planned for STX by developer, Paul Golden. He seems like kind of a questionable character, so I am wondering if this resort is already being built or still in the developmental phase. If so, what doe the locals think of this casino/hotel complex? It is supposed to offer loads of construction jobs in the building phase and about 1200 jobs once completed. This at least sounds like a good thing for the local economy. I was concerned more about environmental effects of the coral reefs in the area....what do you all think or know about this project?

Developmental phase. I already have fellow east end friend grumbling that they're going to sell if it comes end. They are not looking forward to the traffic. We'll see if it ever comes through. If it does it might actually bring back the direct new york flight and others which could be a huge boon to the tourist industry.

Since Wyndham is now the largest timeshare corporation, I wonder if they plan to sell it as timeshare as well as rentals? How about Casino?

A friend in the know said that getting this project passed will be very hard because the Conservation Commission (or whatever Board issues permits in that realm) will strongly oppose it due to the location in Great Pond. No first hand knowledge...just passing that info along.

In my opinion, we'll all be old or dead before this get off the ground. Golden doesn't seem to have the $$$, the organization or the popular or political support to make this happen. And it does sound like it would be a mixed "blessing" for STX.

According to those articles that are floating around the web, the ground breaking should have already happened. Does anyone see any activity or site prep going on?

"ground breaking" means "photo op", not actual construction activity.

I passed by the site the other day and saw no evidence of any construction. Last summer the site was surveyed and some bush cut. We'll see

I live close by, nothing has been done. I don't think he has permission to start yet.

Okay, so it doesn't seem to have any activity. What are your thoughts on this probability? Where exactly on STX is this going to be built? Is it down in the Great Pond or Robin Bay area?

Golden still has a handful of lawsuits against him. Nothing is going to happen anytime soon. He also still has some serious issues with CZM permitting.

Golden just lost another lawsuit two days ago. According to one of the lawyers for an environmental group opposing the project, he's estimating it will take at least 4 more years for all of the lawsuits to be resolved for this project.

Or, it looks pretty good depending on one's perspective.

I can't stress enough, there is division on STX regarding the value of this project generally and Mr. Golden's ability to pull it off in particular.
