I'd pay $10 twice over to get rid of the current plates which, while pretty, have images of fish that are exclusively from the Pacific, with no Caribbean species represented.

The fish on the bottom right of the license plate looks like a French Angel Fish, which is a Caribbean species.. Top right, some kind of parrotfish(?) Not sure about the other 2.

Sunny, you're telling me that 500K was not enough for a party?

It's not a "party". It's an observance of a pivotal point in the history of the Virgin Islands and even more relevant this year on the 100th anniversary of the transfer. As SunnyCaribe said, "Transfer day is a big deal with the potential to benefit everyone directly and/or indirectly." Obviously you have no idea of the business/trade/tourist relationship between Denmark and the US Virgin Islands which is substantial and does indeed work to our benefit. Your dismissal of it as simply "a party" is upsetting but, again quoting SunnyCaribe, "Complaints about the additional $10 by people who have transplanted themselves here seem like deliberate disrespect and willful ignorance."

The ill-conceived $10 which stuck in the craw is not now going to be imposed on the general public so it's a moot point but please try and have a little respect for and gain a little knowledge of the islands' history before denigrating the annual observance as a "party".[/OT.]

Yea you missed my whole point. So explain to me how we need 500k and now more for an "observance". What exactly does an "observance" entail? Will there be local vendors with bar and food carts? Music? Perhaps dancing? Ironically do you think the businsenness will benifit any from this "observation"? They'll likely close to "observe". You missed the entire point of my post.

I think the anniversary is fantastic. I am excited to "observe" it first hand, and I feel super lucky to live here. I realize would not be possible without the transfer but let's be real and call a duck a duck. Still besides the entire point - WHERE IS THE 500k??? What's being done with it?

And lastly to be quite frank you've been here thirty (?) years and I three - that makes you no less of a "transplant" than I am.

You have your mind set and I did not miss your point at all, simply pointed out that you're getting up in arms about something you really know nothing about and seem to have little interest in knowing about. Of course I'm a transplant - what's your relevant point where that's concerned? If you're really interested in knowing how the designated $500K will be spent then follow its progress by reading about all the activities planned for the next year plus.

I love sharing my knowledge of the history of the islands and the wonderful things I've experienced (and physically accomplished) during the process with those who are interested but am uninterested in batting heads with anyone simply looking for an argument about how a relatively measly $500K is going to be spent on a significant anniversary.

Um... so again... I will ask since you're all about education: how will 500k be used and what exactly is an "observation"? How will this differ from a "party"?

Not butting heads at all and I'm wrong all the time and unlike some, I can and often do change and admit when I'm off. Enlighten me and all of us really to your knowledge on what this "observation" will entail.

I think there is a need to find money to match the $500K from the Dept. of Interior. Per article linked below, the federal grant comes with serious restrictions.

That $500K is already spent on a pre order of the manure haulers, (limos).

Well, just about 40 years ago we had a little bit of an observation called the bicentennial birthday of the USA. Sure, there was lot's of birthday partying going on all summer long but also a lot of celebrations and ceremony and re-enactment, reading of the declaration, etc.. I think there was even a bicentennial train museum that crisscrossed the country.

They supposedly started activities in 2015 so they've probably already spent some of the money. I heard that someone wants the coal workers art exhibit that was at the pop up gallery earlier this month wants to be included in activities. That was a great exhibit. It included a documentary film.

Another organization wants to present a multi media presentation on citizenship and what it means. US citizenship was withheld for 10 years after transfer and did not get right to vote for leaders until 1970 something. Reminder that we shouldn't take these things for granted.

Some people are hoping it will be a time to educate as well as "party".
