Well i finally am making my first post after reading these boards for quite a while. Just for a little backround info..my name is Ian Greenblatt and I live in Boston with my Wife, and my 2 kids 9, and 7. We have visited St John 7 times in the past 7 years and we feel ready to make the move that many have already made. We have been talking about this for years but we have finally decided to do something about it and try to make the move. In Boston, I own a medium sized advertising business and my wife is a chef. My quesitons are:
1. How would I do if I opened up a marketing business?
2. What is an average pay for a chef, and is there a need for any chefs on the island?
3. My kids would probably commute to the Antilles school, how is this done..is there a school bus from redhook? How long would it take?

Thank you, My wife and I really want to make this dream come true.

Hi, Ian! Welcome to the board!!

1.) Check out the competition for the advertising world in the yellow pages at www.viphonebook.com. I'm sure you could call them and pick their brains. Just my opinion, but, since STJ has about 3,500 peo[ple, I wouldn't think there would be enough business to keep you open, but I don't know beans about that busines, so take that for what it's worth.

2.) I'm sure someone else, like Chris Cody, could answer that for you. Chris?

3.) Uhhhhh, that might be a problem. I don't think there is a bus (might be wrong, but there might be a private one), so you would have to have a car on STT, as well as STJ, and drive them there yourself. Antilles is a great school (for about $10,000/mo!!!), but it's a little ways (25 minutes there, then 25 minutes back) from the ferry dock. Maybe the Montessori school would be better? It's right around the corner from the dock.

Ian: You are in a spot where you really should come for a look-see visit. There is chef work, but you would need to talk to others in your industry about marketing. There is a group that meets called the Ad Club. Also, there is a good private school on St John- Pine Peace and Coral Bay Schools just merged. Lots of the Antilles kids are begging to transfer! The caveat about being well capitalized goes double for a move to St John!

East Ender...how many kids are currently at the St John schools thta just merged...the reason is because the schools my kids have been going to have say 300 people, they may not like or be used to a school with 50 people.

I don't know how many kids, but none of the schools are big. The entire senior class at Antilles was like 25 (?) last year and that was huge. If the kids don't like small schools, are they going to adapt to the other differences in the VI?

The number for Coral Bay School in the phone book is 340-776-1730, you could check and see if that is still correct.

That is true..they will have to get used to the small schools, but we thought 25 in class, is still easier for them then 25 in total. They are looking foward to the prospect of moving, but we know that it may not be that easy for them and we want to make is as easy as possible.
Anyone know anything else about any marketing businesses?

Hello Ian,

The School/Education section of this site includes number of students by school.

https://www.vimovingcenter.com/schools

From that page you can choose an island, and the list of schools is there.

I just checked the St. John School's (Coral Bay school merged with Pine Peace) web site. They have 205 students from K-12 and 47 faculty members. Average Class size 12 students.

Thanks for the figures...you are right, they will probably go to the St John school, it is less expenisive then the Antilles school and it looks just as good.

Dear Mr. Greenblatt,
I know this is a little informal but I am graduating from Michigan State in December and will have a degree in Advertising with a specialization in Public Relations. I lived in Boston last summer and am moving to the VI's in January and I was just wondering if you re planning to pursue Advertising after your move and have made any plans. I would love to be of any help to you after I am down there as I don't know that much about the islands yet. Anyways thank you for your time and please let me know if you are intrested in looking at my resume etc.
