hello every one. i've been scanning this message board for months and have found it to be the most informative info. on the web. up front, thanks to all of you islanders that take the time to answer all these inquiries. i'm a resident of florida moving to st.thomas in about a month. i have accomodations for 2 weeks along w/ a rental car. i was wondering if any of you could tell me how difficult it may be to find a 1 bdrm. apt, a job at a resteraunt and at the marinas. i was also wondering how necesary it is to have a vehicle for transportation to get around. are the cabs all that exspensive to use while in search of a vehicle once i'm there?
thanx again in advance. i can't wait to get there!

From my perspective, having found a place in 1 day, I would say that your chance of success, and being able to pick and choose a place you'd really like are very very high given a time frame of 2 weeks in which to secure a place. I was very lucky that my first choice could not have been better and happily became available.

From one who does not yet have an "island car", I can tell you that, yes it would be good to have your own transportation.........depending of course on where you work in relation to where you choose to live, and of course how much "getting around" that you wish to do. Safari cabs, are like a $1. a ride in the direction you're going, but they have set, and to some extent, limiting routes they travel

If you are choosing to get a car, perhaps you can do that within the 2 week time period during which you have the rental car?

Hello,

You shouldn't have difficulty finding an apartment... and 2 weeks will allow you to look around and see several so you can pick which suits you. You will be moving in December?? thats a high month of season but many seaonal jobs in restaurants, hotels ect... are more then liking being filled now if not several weeks ago. You will liking still find work just not as many options as if you come just at the beginning of season. Cabs do get expensive - they are per person and per destination. You can try the bus or $1 safaris for main areas. A car is a good idea for convience of getting around the whole island.

hey, thanks a lot for the response. good info to know.

i was wondering too, that if by chance i don't end up living and working within walking distance of each other. will it be difficult to find a vehicle there, or would it be a lot more to my advantage to have one shipped over. you see, i plan on staying for atleast a year. and then who knows after that. which situation do you think would be best considering you're a resident? to tell you the truth, i've never even been there (stt). i'm just taking the plunge and moving. but i've always wanted to live in the islands. so i'm not worried about liking it there. i'm just trying to get a feel for what to expect. does everyone drive there?
by the way, would any one know of any marinas looking for some help? while i'm here, i thought i would ask.
thanks again for your input. it helps.

Hello Stormy,

I drive yes... would find it very difficult to manage otherwise... but of course when I didnt drive I did figure it out - this meant relying on friends who drove for rides and also while attending the university - I worked in town... easy bus ride... as there are two bus stops at the campus and several in town. The buses are not very realiable but once you figure out how they do work then you can work around them - they go to main areas. You can buy a car here... as for shipping one depends on what you own back home, how much it would cost you to ship, consider you will pay a road tax when briiging in a car and posibly import tax if its a non us car. Would you then ship the car back to us or would you sell it here when and if you left?

well, i would just ship it back. i'm thinking the best way for me would be to just get there, find a job and an apt. and do my best to get them both within walking or short bus ride distance. like i said i've never been there. but have no doubts i'll figure it out. after reading through this message board and your info, i think the best bet for me would be to just buy one there if need be. it seems to me most people are friendly and honest enough to help me out, once again, if need be. i guess i was hoping that motor-scooters or bicycles would've been a cheeper and reliable way to go. but after reading through, found that they are not. but, no big deal.
thanks for your time. i'm really excited to arrive! hopefully, i'll run-into some of you.

bye!
