Hey, so i'm thinking of moving to one of the islands in the near future. Any suggestions on first time moving....i have a medium size dog...pet friendly islands? Housing? Room-mates possibly? I've noticed rent is high. Is wages comparible? Any info is greatly appreciated. I'm very excited about this!

Cost of living here is kinda high (rent, food, gas, etc.), but most of the jobs are about the same income as in the States...many people get jobs in the tourism industry, or bar/restaurant work. What type of work do you do?

A PMV is imperative. Read all of the moving stories and do lots of research on the board here...lots of good info to be had...good luck!

Thanks Marty i appreciate the tip. I'm a Massage Therapist. But also very skilled in all areas of the hospitality industry. So i can pretty well do what i got to do to make it...i hope. I've heard you pretty well have to just show up there to get a job, so i'd be looking into possible roomate situations. Thanks again and i'll do my homework, and if anything else comes to mind just give me a shout! Thanks Marti!!

As a massage person you shouldn't have any trouble finding work at all...you could go to any of the spas to apply, all of the hotels to apply, or you could just hang out on a beach and offer them to the tourists (dunno about the legality of that). But I would think that a creative person could come up with better ways than hanging out on the beach...post an ad in the Trader, leave cards in bars and restaurants, hook up with a daysail and offer them a discount for booking thru the sail...hook up with a jewelry store, lots of different things, just need to brainstorm...of course, tending bar or waiting tables in the right place can be lucrative, too...

To practice massage therapy in the VI you will need to have the National Certification, not just the one from the State you live in, and obtain a "Health Card" locally (which is very quick/easy to do). Rent is cheaper in STX, but there are probably more jobs available in STT because of the tourism. I think you are more likely to find a "pet friendly" landlord in STX, and work isn't as seasonal, which is better in the long run. The islands are quite different, so it depends on what you are looking for.
