There's nothing "wrong" with adding another sub-board. But the majority don't seem interested, nor does the board owner, nor do you Rotorhead.
Happy the way it is!
The truthful answer is because I am too lazy. I am not really interested in running a website. I am interested in the discussion. .
Who has suggested you actually run a website? The offers have gone out to create a website and I'm sure amongst the proponents of the suggestion there are at least a few people who'd be interested in running it. At the very least you could posit that question instead lof shrugging off the issue.
As far as there being anything "wrong" with a sub forum, there is nothing "wrong" with Islander's suggestion. The option has been put to the forum contributors and the majority opinion will rule. That's more than fair enough.
So the consensus seems to be keep "residents-topics" and "prospective-residents-topics" together.
As for a 'social' or 'off-topic' board. This was also brought up once in the past. And the intent was to allow board users to chat/discuss off-topics. Something along the lines of a "coffee break" or "happy hour" sub-board... for intellectual discussions, political and also for things like where's your favorite place to vacation when you get off the rock, anyone reading a good book right now. A place to socialize with other board users.
What are thoughts on this?
I would support a "social" or "off-topic" board. I think that's a great idea.
I have decided to simply go away and leave you alone. No more reason to delete threads because of me.
John I miss STX and lurk here now and again but if I get another sailboat I will be back.
I get the videos out from time to time and recall the wonderful aerial circumnav of the island you gave to Vickie and I.
Vickie returned to Cincinnati to be with her new grandchildren so may be sooner than I thought *-)
If you do vote with your feet the LCD wins. Threads are deleted due to the vitrol of tiny minds.
Would you please PM me with links to other fora where you find interesting conversation?

Pretty much.
As always, the issue is TONE.
Some people are just tone-deaf, and that includes me occasionally.
That's why the best change would be an active moderator.
I don't know Islander, but it doesn't seem like he/she is around much and could use the help.
And btw...I'm not volunteering.

I don't know where this came from. I am not interested in setting up and running my own forum. But as I said above, I am interested in and support a new sub-board which allows a greater latitude of topics for discussion.
If that doesn't happen then I will support trainwreck setting up a board that does allow for more open discussion and less censorship.
If all of this "controversial" off-topic discussion is moved off of the relocation board and onto a sub-board which allows for more open discussion doesn't that solve the problem? No one who dislikes controversial discussion need even leave the safety of the relocation board and be offended.
I do not read Islanders message above to say that they are not interested. I read it to say that if there is interest then it could be done.
I am interested. Why would anyone be opposed if it does not impact the current relocation board?
John
.... lets keep it a discussion on whether you agree or disagree with what was put forth: having "a social sub-forum" for off-topic stuff board members might want to discuss with each other. Thank you!
I think its a great idea.
I think a social sub-forum is a good idea.
I really think we need the sub forum.
Its obvious that residents want to have a forum to disuss local issues and many come here to do that.
Additionally, prospective residents will get more insight into what its REALLY like to live in the VI from folks who have had the experience.
Why not set it up and give it a six month beta?
Well 4 people that made a statement don't even live on the Rock or Rocks (STJ,STT,STX)! Go figure. That would be Michaelds9, Terry, Linda and Neil. Maybe some others. The OP (New Discussion Board Needed for Residents).

Neil is a relatively recent transplant who lives on island, the other three are former residents.
Neil moved off the island of STX! Michaelds9 lived on a Boat for a very short period of time (months) and moved to a home in Florida, Terry is a part time resident from Arizona owns a condo on STX, LindaJ moved back to Kentucky after 8 years as a full time tenant resident on STX.
I'd start contributing again if there was a lightly moderated board for "resident topics", here or elsewhere. As long as civility was maintained.
In the past I found that any topic that became remotely controversial - even directly related to current local issues - was immediately slammed as being "not related to moving" and therefore not considered a valid topic. After being subjected to this a few times I've stopped posting as a result.
I say bring back 'club snarky' for the enjoyment of all, be yea pastafarians or not.
What is the point of Knocking any Religious Entity or Pastafarian's on a relocation forum. Keep the forum the way it is. If a subject is deleted so be it. Some good messengers (posters) have been deleted and that's should be changed.

If the board owners chooses to delete/moderate posts is one thing.
BUT for a board participant(s) to try to do because they don't like the subject matter is a very different idea.
We brought two vehicles and personal possessions to STX. We planned to rent ashore but the death of my father-in-law just before we moved meant we could not afford the rents on island so we had to move onto the tired old boat I bought a couple of years prior. We left because 3 of our "children" were too old to successfully make the transition to "liveaboard dogs" (two have since went to heaven) and getting them on and off the boat messed up our backs big time. Thank heavens for Dr. Doering and Dr. Bishop! I found the majority of Crucians to be very nice people. Hell even after being robbed my wallet was returned intact less the cash. My skills as a highly experienced refrigeration tech seemed to be very marketable.
Things change and I wish to return - just a matter of when.
The point being I believe I have a legitimate interest in a board called vimovingcenter and keeping up with current events.
I found John to be an interesting person and a friend who helped me unasked before we ever met.
He has strong opinions and they are well known. What I do not comprehend is why people deliberately look for reasons to be offended. Lets face it "Blasphemy Day" kinda telegraphs the subject does it not? LOL !
If you don't like it don't open the thread. Is it really that easy to get some peoples goat?
"First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the socialists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me."
Remember trying to squelch another's speech may some day cost you your own.
Your reason for coming or going was not a matter of discussion. Very dramatic post, however this is not a public forum but a private message forum which i kind of like the way it is. Oh you are not a resident not sure if it really matters just an observation.
Having another forum on this board for "social" or "open discussion" I think is a great way to solve all of the discussions, and I think would please the majority of people here. It's not that hard to click at the top to change to another board. Topics can be moved back and forth if necessary - and the disclaimer for the "open" board could be that it is a broad board open to all discussions (minus trolls/flaming), enter at own risk! 😉

Ah so are "Islander"? You own the board and You make the rules?
Did you buy it just a few weeks ago?
Did Islander appoint you as policy manager?
Or did you appoint yourself? Are you just a judgemental busybody?
If you are unhappy I guess you could ask your membership fee be returned and take your trade elsewhere.
More likely you will ask that I be banned............
Please the OP states ( New Discussion Board Needed for Residents) RESIDENTS! I will not respond anymore to your posts Michael you seem to want to fight. Have a good day!
Neil moved off the island of STX! .
My error. I mis-read an abbreviated post in which he quoted another poster and which information I wrongly attributed to him.
I'm a little confused by your statement that, "this is not a public forum but a private message forum". It's a pubic forum inasmuch as anyone can read it and anyone can register to contribute to it, ergo it's a public forum operated by a private company which all internet forums are.
Without splitting hairs, this forum is managed with certain rules, If it were a true public company the first amendment would apply.:D

Do you know of any internet forums which aren't moderated? Or publicly owned and operated forums with or without moderators? Just curious.
