NEW COMER TO VI
Hi All,
I was offered today a job in V.I St Thomas and I am wondering if it was not a joke.
Indeed, as an expat (from Europe/ France) , it says I have been elected for the job and that there is no traditional interviews since it is based on my background and experience which is surprising to me.
Has any of you been through this kind of recruitment? what are your thoughts if not?
More generally speaking, if you can give me hints about housing, life and joys of living there i would much appreciate (i am single with no kids)
Thx
Sebastien
Sounds fishy to me. I hope they are not requesting capital Money
no that is why it is strange..
I would definitely be very suspicious -- they may be trying to gain your trust first and ask for money in the next step.
Can you share the name of this enterprise? Or what it is that you do?
Sure sounds odd to me. Tread carefully and do your research about the company and by all means DON'T SEND THEM ANY MONEY!!!!!
As for hints on living in the USVI's this forum and the relocation website has tons of information. Use the links at the top of the page and browse the forum, use the search feature and read everything that's here - every conceivable question about living on the island has been addressed hundreds of times.
Unless you're a world reknowned superstar in your field no company worth it's paper is going to offer you a job without an interview (except some network marketing / sales type roles where you bare risk up front in terms of paying for something.)
What does elected for a job mean?
Plus, you cannot work here unless you are a US Citizen or have a green card.
That's not True, you can get a work Visa if no one else can qualify or are not available for certain positions.
It may be an opening to get more personal info from you. As others said, be very careful.
Sebastien,
Are you a US citizen, or do you have a green card? Or do you have some rare skills not normally available in the job market?
My students are constantly asking me to evaluate such "offers." So far, they are 100 percent bogus. Maybe your "offer" is real. But be skeptical.
I would be interested in hearing about when the next shoe drops. My guess is 98 percent bogus.
If you want to consider relocating to the USVI, plan for a visit of at least several weeks. Check the job market and living conditions.
And pay close attention to the postings on this forum. It's the best source of advice you can get about moving to the VI.
Good luck!
I amend my remark to include a work visa for someone with a special, highly sought-after skill.
