Net Flix - Change in Policy
Previously Net Flix's license with the studios would not let them download instant movies to subscribers having an ISP identified as being located in the VI.
With Net Flix's recent shift to allowing unlimited downloading they now allow those of us in the VI to use this feature.
I watched a movie last evening and the video quality was good when I ran the picture from my laptop to my flat screen TV. No jerks or stops for over two hours. At some points the picture was a little fuzzy for a few seconds but it was alway very watchable.
Give it a try.
Jim
Thanks for the tip, Jim Dandy!
I'm still bummed that I can't watch streaming video from ABC.com down here.

Huh? Yesterday when I got the notice email, I clicked to watch and it said no good because I'm outside the US 50. Just read your post and tried again, this time went to the webpage and clicked Browse Instant and it says no good you're outside the U.S. 50.
How'd you get the feature to work??
I have gotten the same message previously so I was surprised when it worked. I just tried it again after reading your post and watched the first thirty seconds of another movie.
Perhaps it is some screw up in their ISP list and they no longer think the ISP I use is in the VI.
If I were you I would write them an complain and ask for a discounted rate since you/we don't get all the benefits that a stateside subscriber gets, but we pay the same price.
Jim
I think you are right about it being a screwup. I tried at home and work a few times now and keep getting the old message about being outside the U.S. 50
I'm jealous! I think I'm canceling Netflix for now. That would've definitely made me pause!
I watched feature length films both on Tuesday & Wed evening.
There is software/ web sites you can use to hide your location/ISP. I was able to fool Net Flix several months ago doing this, but it slowed the video transmission down so much that I could not enjoy the movie. Perhaps you could find a better set up than I did and get this approach to work for you.
Jim
How do you run a picture from a laptop to a TV? A friend watched a Netflix movie on her computer but she has the Sprint wireless card for her laptop & maybe they couldn't tell her location using it. Anyway, I think she said she couldn't get the sound (or maybe the movie didn't run smoothly - I can't remember which.)
Your TV needs to be able to serve as a computer monitor. Many flat screen LCD or Plasma TVs will. You then set the TV up to act as an external monitor for your laptop. A cable is run from the external monitor output on your laptop to the appropriate jack on your TV.
Unless you want to listen to the program through the tiny speaker in your laptop you will also need some external speakers. They plug into the headphone jack.

I don't know any details, or if this is any assistance at all, but Apple just announced that you can now download movies from the iTunes store. For more information go to www.apple.com/itunes/store
Here is the e-mail I received today:
Your favorite Hollywood movies are now available to rent from the iTunes Store—just $3.99 for new releases and $2.99 for library titles. Sit back and enjoy the show on your computer, or transfer movies to your iPod or iPhone and watch on the go.

Thanks, Jim Dandy. Don't have a flat-screen so even if I get high-speed it won't help.
I luuuurrve itunes. I've always used them to download shows I've missed. Or to watch old tv shows from decades gone by. Works out cheaper to me then the tivo and I can watch it on my tv or my ipod at the gym. With itunes you dont have to go through the hassle of connecting your computer (or have a dedicated computer) to your plasma, you just buy a $30 adapter for you ipod that usually will even come with a remote. You put the ipod in its docking bay and you're good to go.
Great to hear they have rentals now, their movies that you were able to buy preivously were such slim pickins.
