Need to live near the Ferry in STT
Hi Guys. I'm moving down in January and will be working at the Westin in St John and living in St Thomas.. I need to live close to the ferry that takes me to St John so that I don't need to buy a car. Can anyone tell me what part of St Thomas that would be? Or if not, could you direct me to a place where there is a detailed map of the islands?
Thanks a bunch
Michael
Hello Michael,
There are two ferries to St. John from St. Thomas. However the Red Hook Ferry is the one that commuters from St. Thomas to St. John use most because it starts running at 6:30am and again at 7:30am and then hourly from 8am to midnight, also is a shorter ride.
I thought I'd mention that the ferry offers a frequent commuter booklet of tickets. That works out much cheaper then buying a ticket everyday.
The Red Hook ferry is located in Red Hook which is on the East End of St. Thomas. So you would want to find an apartment on the East End, close to Red Hook.

The hotel has free ferry for workers in the morning. No need for a commuter booklet!

Thanks Ronnie for the info. 🙂

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I knew that the Westin offered the free ferry ride, but I just wanted to make sure that I found a place on the east side of town that you mentioned
🙂

Is it true that the red hook area is laced with crime?
I've been here since the beginning of December and heard through the grapevine of one robbery at a bar/restaurant in Red Hook. Someone who has lived here longer may have better info.
Why do you "have" to live on STT?
Wouldn't it be easier to live on STJ?
No, it is not true.
There is not as much housing on STJ as STT, and there are stores and amenities on STT that ST. johnians must comute to. So, living on STT is easier than on STJ, and commuting is easy.
See, I agree. Living in St John would be stupid. I would only be working on St John. If I were to shop and stuff, I'd have to commute to St Thomas, so I figured living on St Thomas would be the smartest thing to do, esepcially because my job will pay for the ferry rides to St John. 🙂
I live and work on STJ.
I rarely have to go to STT for anything. Maybe once a month trips to Cost-U-Less, K-Mart or Home Depot. There are very few things that you MUST go to STT for.
In the meantime, I get to live in St. John, which for all intents and purposes is a much nicer island than STT. I mean no offense to folks who live on STT, but to make a point, many St. Thomians come to STJ on their days off to relax and enjoy the beaches or water and the reverse is never true.
I also lived here for quite awhile with no car. Because the island is so small it's easy to walk around or hitch a ride, which is something I'd never do on STT.
St. John has an extremely low crime rate.
Of all the things said in the last few posts, the only one I agree with is that housing is more difficult to find. Difficult, yes. Impossible, no. Worth it, certainly.
You should also take into account your travel times. If you take the ferry to and from work every day, that's an extra hour of commuting every day not including any commute to the ferry from your Red Hook apartment. That adds up fast.
I have friends that commute and they consider it the bane of their existence and have colorful words for the ferry that I won't repeat here.
Those are my 2 cents.
Rich. Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Me personally? I would much rather live on STJ because I like to live close to work. But we'll see what happens when I get down there. I'm moving down blind having never been to any of the islands before, which doesn't bother me one bit. I'm moving down for work and will make the best of the situation, like I always do
Thanks again.
what's the name of the area of STT where the small pier is (not Havensight-the other end)? What's the name of the Marina next door?
