Need some more advice
Hello all,
So I need some more advice! I've posted on here, in the past, about moving down there in the next few years. My wife has agreed to the move but would like some more input and advice. We both love St Johns. When were both done with school we should be able to afford living there. Here are a few questions.
1. What are you loves about living in the VI?
2. What do you hate about living in the VI?
3. Is the crime a major problem?
4. Recommended schools in St John's (Private schools).
Any thing else you can add would help.
Thanks,
Jeff
1. The weather (excluding recent weather, of course), the people and, Did I mention the weather?
2. The weather (including recent weather, of course), the people, the roads, the cost of living and, did I mention the weather?
3. How long is a piece of string? Crime is everywhere. Mind your p's and q's and crime won't (mostly) be an issue.
4. Private.
5. Soon come for a PMV and experience paradise for more than a vacation. Live here awhile and make your own decisions.
6. Don't come with an empty wallet.
St. John is over rated. No schools to speak of. Cruise ships are stopping there and make the impossible traffic that much worse. EVERTHING is overly expensive and need to ferry to St. Thomas for groceries, etc. Many people keep a car in each island. Over run by tourists and Safari Buses. Visit for a while and then make up your mind. Wait for the tourist season so you can observe first hand the problems.
I may be wrong, but i don't think ANY cruise ships dock on STJ.
Crime is a problem but not the problem that most people find distressing enough to come and then leave because of -- -- --- --- --- Stateside expectations are not met by the Caribbean lifestyle and attitude - this island time, soon come, ain reach yet, gone to come back, non competitive customary way of living, just drives a fair amount of new arrivals and short timers to irritation - We just do it differently here and no one will ever change that -- Thank God!
Oh, and there is NO "S" on the end of St John - please.
1. What are you loves about living in the VI? The People, the Weather, the Natural Beauty, living a more Simple Life
2. What do you hate about living in the VI? No hates, I don't feel so strongly about any inconveniences...but being far away from family is sometimes a bummer
3. Is the crime a major problem? Speaking about St. John....no. There is crime, but it is not a major problem
4. Recommended schools in St John's (Private schools). There are only a couple non-parochial private schools, A Montessori (I think it is Pre - 1st) and Gifft Hill School (Pre - 12th Grade)
St. John doesn't have any cruise ships that dock...a couple stop off shore a ways, but they are pretty small. We also do not have any safari buses. What is called a safari bus on St. Thomas is called a taxi on St. John. We also have 6 grocery stores on St. John. They are more expensive than the ones on St. Thomas, but you certainly don't have to go to St. Thomas to grocery shop! We also don't have much traffic to speak of, heck, we don't even have a single stop light on the entire island! I don't know a single person who keeps a car on both islands. People use the car barges to get back an forth, which makes sense, because if you go shopping on St. Thomas, I don't see anyone wanting to unpack one car to take a passenger ferry, pay the extra "baggage" fee, and then have to load up another car when they get to St. John. BUT, I am assuming you already know all of this since in sounds like you have been here before 😀
There are cruise ships that anchor out and tender into Cruz Bay.
To me safari has two meanings: 1. an open re-constructed truck with bench seats that carries more passengers than it probably should and 2. a "dollar ride", illegal but accepted bus system using a safari vehicle. I think St John has the first but not the second, no???
"When were both done with school we should be able to afford living there. " Hmmm...*-) I guess that assumes that your school will lead to well compensated work.
"6. Don't come with an empty wallet." Yes, yes and yes....
You are right about the taxis on St. John....they all look like the "safari bus" on St. Thomas. They have taxi rates, no dollar ride on St. John other than the Vitran Bus 🙂 If you want to taxi on St. John in an enclosed vehicle with A/C, you are going to be sitting around for a looooooooong time!
