Need medical insurance? BEWARE of Amedex!!!!
hello everyone on the board
In the past some folks have inquired about medical insurance in the USVI. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about Amedex. It turns out that they DO NOT cover any condition that manifests itself during the 90 day "waiting period" That is, you sign on for your coverage, start paying your premiums, but...if you come down with any condition whatsoever during the first 90 days, it is NOT covered. It is not covered for the lifetime of the ailment and that includes prescriptions. And you are NOT told this until after you sign on—you will see it in the "exclusions" section of your contract.
My husband's employer provided medical insurance (well, they only paid 50% of the premiums) with United Healthcare. When United raised their rates, his employer switched to Amedex. We didn't get the contract until about a month later. Then a month after that, my husband was diagnosed with glaucoma (runs in the family) Well, that was during the 90 day "waiting period" and after jumping thru hoops and making tons of phone calls to find out why our Pharmacy claim wasn't being processed, I finally got someone there to explain the situation. The onset of the glaucoma was during the first 90 days, so it would not be covered for the rest of his life!
Fortunately, now my employer is with United and my husband is on my plan....so we have a happy ending, but I just wanted to warn anyone who was contemplating buying coverage with Amedex that you should know that if you become ill with something NEW during the first 90 days, you will NEVER be covered, even tho' you are paying the premiums! Buyer beware.
Island Joan,
If i wanted HealthInsurance but wasnt covered under a company could i still use United? I am a 23 yr moving but mostly likely doing touristy jobs for peak season coming up and would like the security of having insurance. Any advice/suggestions would be wonderful.
Thank you!
