Need Long Term Car Rental
I will be living in St. Thomas for three months and was told that having a car is almost essential if you are living outside of town. Is this true? I was quoted $1,000 per month to rent a car from an agency. Any suggestions?

Hello SDQ,
It is to some extent true, a car makes getting around a whole lot easier. If you live in some areas of North Side or West End and work in town or East End getting around will be a task because its a far distance through residential and commericial areas. If you live in say East End and work also in East End then you can make do without a car. There is public bus, dollar bus and taxis that you can rely on, the first two run primarily through commericial areas and some residential areas. If you work at night then a car is a good idea or else you will have to take taxis or rely on co-workers to help you out. If its $3000 for rental car for the time you are here and you have the $ you might buy a used car and sell it when you leave. Or plan to live and work in the same general area. Also call around to different agencies to get different prices, if you are coming during off season - summer try to get a deal for the 3 months. All the best.

Islander,
Thank you for the information. As of now, I have no idea where I will be living, but will be working in town. I have sent out requests for information to several rental agencies and have only heard back from the one with the ridiculous $1,000/mo. quote. I have cars in Los Angeles and in Fort Lauderdale. Do you think it might be cheaper to ship them?
Thanks again,
SDQ
You CAN rent an island car for $300.00/month not including insurance...which will run around $250.00/yr for liability. Your stateside insurance is basically useless here anyway., so you can't just tell a rental agency that you will use IT. Come down, rent for a week or a month & check it out yourself,

Hello SDQ,
The car you have in Fort Lauderdale - you might be able to ship it... the shipping may be around say $800 just a guess you would need to call a shipper to find out for sure. Then go to the car shipping section of this site and read through the various taxes and do the math and see what it would run you.
