Where is there and what kind of info?
Tis for the reply. Stt or St john. Where not to live proccess for renting there. Will my son ha e enough to do for a year. Is work available
Have you read all the information available on this site (from "Home" on the left to "Message Board" on the right. top of this page) and have you planned a PMV? That's where you should start as 99% of general questions will be answered there before getting into details while, after reading everything, a PMV will enable you to make an educated decision as to whether a move here would suit your particular circumstances.
Thanks oldtart......does anybody there give straight answers..
where would not live.
.that's an easy question. Is work easy to come by...yes or no. Y son will have to be a resident for a ye before going to u of VI so can he be busy for a year yes or no.. I need real answers and all help will be welcome its my sons future. Thanks
You have to ask straight questions to get straight answers. Whether or not your son can be hired depends on your son. Some 18 year olds have the work ethic and attitude to do well and others are too lazy or introverted to fit into the kinds of jobs available to youth in the islands.
There are thousands of conversational threads on this site that address every question anyone has ever thought to ask about moving to the USVI. Chances are your questions are answered many times over. After you have done some homework and have a clue what you are getting into, if you post some specific questions that have occurred to you there will surely be some helpful responses coming your way.
If your son is planning to attend UVI, it wouldn't make much sense to move to St. John as the commute to school would be seriously heinous from logistical and financial points of view.
If your son's future is the paramount item of importance, I can't help but wonder why you'd be pushing to enroll him in UVI instead of a mainland college or university where he'd have an easier time fitting in and almost certainly receive a much better education. JMHO
Thank u Alexandra. That's what I need. I don't know what I am getting into but why not. My son can fit in anywhere with anybody...I see him starting his life with a different outlook one from the islands not a bad way for him to start. Just a little info from the ones who have done this. Is there that much for y'all to do that a few question couldn't be answered. I do thank all of u and hope the sunset is great today. The name is Roger and glad to met all of u

Sorry you're offended by being pointed in the right direction to have your questions answered. "Real answers" and "straight answers" are right on this site and all you have to do is go through the pulldown menus. That's what this website is all about - specifically designed to give information to you and the many hundreds of other people just like you who every year think about moving here. You really couldn't ask for more readily available information. Happy researching!
Also, the questions you are asking - where to live - for example, are NOT easy questions to answer.
First WELCOME.
UVI has a number of programs. Has he decided upon an area of study?
There is no "college town" type support network. You may wish to contect the unverisy directly. Ask if UVI can offer some advise. it may be worth spending the money to enroll part time (just take one class) so that he can make some contacts.
As an 18 year old high school graduate with no "connections', your son will need to be very mature, self motivated, responsible to live alone on STT, STJ. Most of the UVI students come from the territory and already have strong networks. If your son enjoys water sports (sailing, diving, fishing etc), It will be easier for him to make connections. Living in the VI is learning experience in itself. I admire his sense of adventure.
The cost of living is high (rent, food, gas). About 10% to 30% higher then mainland usa. Will you help pay his bills? He will probably need to find roommate. Most neighborhoods are "safe". Some are dicey.
Finding work will depend upon his level of experience. What type of work does he want?
is he coming straight from a usa high school?
blu4u: The OP says in his first post that he and his wife and his son are planning a move here. not the son on his own. He further adds that his son has to establish residency here of one year in order to attend UVI and the question he asks is whether there is enough to keep his son busy for that year.

Alexandra, Across the county, stateside jr colleges/city colleges are experiencing record enrollment while managing drastic budget cuts. Private 4 year schools average about 45K per year. UVI doesn't look that bad....

Sorry. As a parent of two college students, I thought I could offer some concrete help. But I guess I should tell the poster to read the message broad like the previous posts suggest, right?

Perhaps some of the regular posters could benefit from throughly reading the board. The following is found under guidelines:
https://www.vimovingcenter.com/info/messageboard.php#rules
"Welcome new members. In response to a question, provide an answer; do not respond solely with instructions to use the search feature.".
The purpose of this broad is to provide a forum for question and answers.
The funny thing is that the same time they take to say "read all the previous posts" or "your questions have been answered already" (loose quotes), they could just answer the questions. If one is so bothered by a new poster's questions, just don't reply. There are other posters that will. I'm just saying.....
Sorry, can't help but jump in with my 2 cents.
First of all if you want a question answered please make it a whole question and be specific. Some of the questions ARE difficult like "where shouldn't I live". How exactly does one answer that without putting both feet directly into your mouth? It also depends on your lifestyle, and knowing the ages of the family doesn't help. There are too many factors involved for a pat answer. If you are asking where the bad neighborhoods are it is understandable but, driving around you will probably be able to get a clear picture of that for yourself. Having someone basically make a list of them will not net them any friends so you are putting them in a very awkward position and it really isn't fair to them.
My understanding is that most housing asks for 1st, last and deposit probably with some doing credit checks.
Secondly, after putting 5 children through college I can't imagine asking ANY forum for advice on that, it's too important for anonymous people to have an input in. Anyone can say anything.
Thirdly, how can we possibly know if your son can find a job? ANYWHERE you go you can find a job if you're really willing to work. Sometimes it's the worst job available but it provides a paycheck.
Most of the people on here have been very nice and willing to answer anything that they felt they could and it is appreciated but the people asking the questions have a direct input into whether or not they get satisfactory answers.
Sniping between members is counterproductive and sullies the reading for many.
Thanks tampip....ithought eariler about what answers all of u have given me could come back and haunt them didn't mean to do that u all know each other. Just thanks for the info like all of u I will have to do this on my own.
..thanks again
The "where should I NOT live" question is a VERY hard one to answer. Can YOU, original poster, answer that question for ME if I were to want to move to YOUR town? I lived in my "hometown" for 30 years and I am certain I could only give you a vague answer for that. Maybe if you had an address I could let you know if that is safer or not as much. More specific questions from you will make them much easier to answer. Your other question, about can you get a job here...why, yes, you can. Can your 18 year old son find something to occupy him for a year, again, yes.
Now, PLEASE HELP US HELP YOU WITH MORE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS!!
Welcome to the board, Roger. I want you, your family and your son to move here and LOVE it like I do.
Since you asked directly...
Places I, personally, would not live on STT: Bovoni, Smith Bay, Hospital Ground or anywhere with in 1,000 yards of cockfighting bar or dumpster.
Places I would like to live or have lived (and liked) on STT: Freachmans'Bay, Northside, Water Point.
I would live on STJ (but not in cruzbay or peterbay), if I had piles of money, didn't have a job and had a personal assistant to run errands and big guest house to bring in friends for week long parties.
That's my opinion. I'm sure some people will disagree. Other people may have different ideas. Hve you visited STT? What area did you stay in? Did you like it?
If you have not visited STT or STJ, I strongly suggest you come for a pre-move visit - preferably 2-3 weeks. Get a feel for what we are saying.
I know on STX, I lived in an area that others would not have liked. So much depends on you personal wants and needs. For example, will your son have transporation or will he need to make due with public? If public, that limits your housing options considerably.
If he is responsible and a self starter, he'll have no trouble finding a job. What he will also find is an island where the legal drinking age is 18 and where there will be lots of young people his own age to hang with. That can be good, but it can also lead to some major problems.
Good morning and thanks lindaj. We plan to ship at least 1 car maybe 2 depends on cost. Thought maybe scooters. Will have money each month to cover rent and power. Work would be for food and extras and to fight off boredom. I have been there many times mostly on water island. There for trips and the water. Didn't care then about stuff like this
My son will be fine no worriers there. My wife is still scared about the move to a new and strange place. My son and I are not. He is the last of six and there needs to be something special for.him and this move will be it. Question what is the cheapest means of transportion to PR. Thanks and once again thanks to all.
The only regular way to PR is by plane. If you figure $150 per person RT, that will probably be in the ball park.
Look for deals with Seaborn or CapeAir.
Thanks again lindaj. What is the main staples for food for regular people....rice potatoes fish? ?????? When is the best time of the year to rent a place. My son graduates high school next may...thanks again and thanks to visnorkler I hoped I would hear from u. .thanks .
Thanks blu4u
it would be a trip about every three months for the VA. It was just a thought as I think about living there on a daily basis. Do most of u get together often or never. Have a great day
VA provides some service on STT, but not as extensive as the care given in PR.
