Hi, I am a contractor looking to move to the island in a few years. My wife and I have been planing this for a few years now. I want to know if there is work for experienced contractors to do work on the island. I completely remodel houses here, from start to finish. We specialize in Tile, Marble, and Stone. I think I could even open a tile store on the island. i would like to have feed back from everyone willing to give advice to me. I also fly a plane and thought about running tours in a small plane, but i am afraid that might not appeal to everyone. Thank you all for your help.

As with any small community, the 'established' contractors get most of the work, due to reputation and referrals...starting a competing business is doable, but it might take a while to be profitable...
As for plane tours, we have helicopter tours, and I think the Seaplane will do tours, also...so, it's feasible...you might want to hook up with the cruise lines to garner the greatest number of bookings...

A good way to break into the business is buy something and remo it or build something. This gives you a crash course on the details of how different contracting on an island is. The labor force is different in their attitude about schedules. Materials can be in short supply and shipping costs have to be accounted for. I'm not trying to discourage you< I just am trying to make you aware that the learning curve can be quite steep. Networking is key. Presently on STX there is builing going on but Real Estate is still slow. Some bargains are beginning to pop up and look attractive from an investment perspective. Thank you for your advice. I love a chance to build a name on the island for myself. I do want to come to the island mainly to enjoy the views and the great people i hear about.
