I am an attorney and I have an interview with a law firm in St. Thomas. Usually it is the custom in our profession to pay for moving expenses for relocation or for a new hire. Are things different in the Virgin Islands because it's so expensive to move furnishings and cars? If anyone can give me some insight on their experiences with their relocation and moving expenses it would be greatly appreciated!

Kelli,

Since different companies have different relocation policies, I'm not sure in your case, but the company I interviewed with (I should find out today if I get the job or not) pays for all relocation expenses (packing, shipping including two cars, plus any other expenses incurred). In my case there's a weight limit on the possessions you choose to move, but that certainly makes for a good time to clean house and take only what you REALLY want or need.

What line of work are you in? I'm just curious. Did they tell you about the relocation package during the interview? Where are you moving from?

I'd rather not say just yet what line of work I'm in just yet, but yes, they told me all about the relocation package during the interview. I would expect most employers would (if they do intend to pay for everything), especially in this case, where it's a definite "perk" when moving from the mainland.

BTW - still haven't found out yet. Should be today (I know, I've said that before).

Good luck on your job. I'm coming from a firm in the states that paid twice for me to move to two different states. I think I'm going to try to videoconference an initial interview - so I can ask some questions. I need to know how much of a paycut I'm going to take. I'm obviously going to push for no paycut. But I don't know if that's realistic. Did you keep your same salary?

Heh heh...Kelli, still don't know...yet. Not meaning to bash "island time", because I respect it, but they do take longer than one used to the hustle and bustle of the mainland would expect.

About salary - I expect a slight increase (between 5% and 10%), but things might be completely different for an attorney. Whatever the case may be for you, I'm sure I'd be happy to trade my salary on the island for your salary on the island! 🙂

Why so secretive about your line of work?

I'm probably just being anally paranoid (how's that for a descriptor?) about someone from my prospective employer monitoring this. Sorry. I will be sure and de-shroud the mystery of my line of work as soon as I know something solid (hopefully today). Jeez - I'm beginning to sound like the boy who cried wolf.

Kelli, hopefully you're monitoring this board still. The offer was made and accepted. I'm in the petrochemical business.
