Maybe some of your saw this in the newspapers, but one of my colleages was held up while in a parking lot by a guy with a gun. This is the 42nd robbery of the year. Im worried. This may sound stupid but I say we organize a rally and get as many people as we can and walk down the streets of Charlote Amelie, maybe the police would get the message and actualy do something instead of drink beer all day, crime is getting out of hands and we cant just leave it to the police.

While I do not condone anyone being robbed, the article said they were robbed at Drakes Seat at 3:15 in the AM, quite different than being robbed in a parking lot. Drakes Seat is a scenic overlook, on a road that people just wiz by on, not exactly where you will be wanting to hangout at 3 in the morning! You really do have to be careful and not make it easy for criminals to operate.

I'm sorry to hear about the unfortunate turn of events for your friend but I'm going to rant here a little bit on a parallel subject....here it goes:

WOW!!! And, this didn't happend on STX!!! You mean there's also a "crime problem" on STT....hold me back! Getting tired of reading posts that make STX look like hell and STT like heaven! Crime's EVERYWHERE; in your backyard, hometown,...everywhere. With a little bit of common sense we can all avoid being a victim.

Once again, sorry about what happened to your colleague.

I agree with Ali. I live in a midwestern US city, the size of STX, adn last year, just a couple miles from our house (outside the city) a methanphetomine (spelling?) lab was discovered. A couple years ago, there were three people murdered and their bodies were found within 3 miles of our house. People's bodies are periodically found in the river along our city, rapes happen around the college and there is gang activity.
Our city was rated (back in 98') the 3rd most safe city in the US, so with crime being a little less in this city than in the islands I can only imagine what happens in other cities in US.

I think people are safer in the islands as opposed to cities in mainland contrary to what some islanders think.

I think it would be interesting for someone to do a study on the % of crime that is:

A. Drug or alcohol related and/or
B. Occuring between 1-5 AM

I don't mean just in the islands, but anywhere in the country, or the world for that matter.

I'd bet that it would be in excess of 90%.

I have traveled extensively, and have NEVER had a problem. I also have NOTHING to do with the drug trade, I avoid places where people are obviously very drunk, and I am almost always tucked in by 10 or 11 (or at least at home).

Now, I know there will be those that say "Why should I have to be home at 10 or 11 PM?", and I guess my answer would point to the statistics that such a study would reveal.

Just my 2 cents.

Mike

I have heard that of at least 95% of crimes commited, they were under the influence of something or the other. Don't know about the times.

Crime is a favorite topic on this and other sites.

Crime is a problem in the USVI.

Good police can reduce crime.

"indifferent" police help no one.

USVI crime could be controlled with little police effort.

Attitude, "relatives" and lack of training keep island cops from doing the right thing.

The real problem is not the police but the "system"

The "system" is about poverty..jobs..esteem.

Vote for good government and no "scams"

Things can get better

Its a world problem and more than likely the criminals are doing it for drug money. Kids here in Australia also glue and petrol sniff so they dont need hold up people for that. The kicks they get from it has yet to be explained to me.
Sorry about your friend
