My first of many...
Hello everyone...
I'm going to save my breath with the compliments about this site, you all know how good it is. For the past 3 weeks I have been reading everything on this site (meaning every post since January to every write up and stat) and I have really really learned alot and had my eyes opened.
I am a 22 year old who will be graduating from UD in 2 months with a Criminal Justice / Liberal Arts degree. Last summer some friends of mine put an incredible idea into my head... Said friend's dad had just purchased a 50' (estimate) cat in the BVI after years of chartering one during Christmas break. Plan was for all of us to graduate, live on the boat, and work somewhere in either set of islands and just enjoy life. Turns out I'm the only one still serious about that dream which leaves me looking now to the USVI instead of the BVI.
So... first question, what are the major differences in living in the USVI as opposed to the BVI. I know I haven't given much detail about what my standards of living are, etc etc... but i'm just looking for general information since there isn't a bvimovingcenter.com site. So any knowledge you have is appreciatted.
Kyle
Kyle,
BIG MAIN DIFFERENCE - it is very difficult to get a work permit in the BVI - visit http://www.bvi.gov.vg and go to the general information center. You'll find some good information. As for the moving here, well, visit the moving section on this site. Lots of great information!
Enjoy the dream!
Pamela.
Hello Kyle,
What type of work will you be looking for? And how long do you want to live here (a few months or permanently?)

As far as work goes I'm remaining flexible. I'd like to start my professional career in some form of criminal justice related field, however i'd be more than happy being a dive guide or bartender. Also I'm looking into the University for research opportunities and the like.
As far as length of stay, anywhere from 6 months to a year, unless things go extremely well and I have reason to stay.
Thank you for that link to the BVI Government site. The work permit process does seem quite intense, however the benefit to the BV Islanders can clearly be seen.
Hello Kyle,
I don't know much about the positions someone with your degree would be willingly or able to take however there were a couple classifieds for legal/admin assistants lately - might be better to stay in the field so you can look out for something more in line with your degree rather then bartending where you likely won't hear much about the legal world - in any case here is the ads,
LEGAL ASSISTANT / OFF. MANAGER; needed for small but busy litigation practice in St. Thomas. Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills to maintain high standards in this professional office, and is proficient in the word processing, filing, and telephone skills necessary to assist attorneys. Salary commensurate with experience & qualifications; available immediately. Send resume to LegalRecruitingVI@hotmail.com or by fax (340) 714-1245.
and
Busy 3 attorney law office seeks administrative assistant/ office manager to manage staff, assist with litigation and real estate closing, and coordinate office operations. Salary and duties dependent upon abilities and experience. Email to mdrpc@viaccess.net or fax resume to 777-5498.
Certainly use all your talents and look for jobs in multiple places bartending, diving like mentioned - so you have more options open.
Good Luck.
