My day on STT
One of the ports of call visited during a cruise I just returned home from was STT. I had no illusions that I was going to be able to do any sort of meaningful PMV (pre-move visit) recon, but I did get the opportunity to take an extended one-on-one guided tour along the main routes of the island as well as several hours to explore portions of town. All in all it was very interesting and very beautiful and served to whet my appetite to get down to the island to conduct a proper visit.
While walking back to the pier from town, It starting raining drops as large as Robin eggs that stung when they hit. It was a helluva deluge while it lasted. It was also strange walking back past an old folks home and one of the "projects" there along the port road after seeing all the multimillion dollar homes on the island. Some folks I talked too weren't very impressed with STT and found St Maarten/St Martin to be a nicer place. I however, loved STT and can't wait to spend some quality time there.
If any of you know a tour guide called "chop chop", tell him Jay says thanks for an interesting, informative and all around pleasant tour.
PS: I read "Don't Stop The Carnival" while on the cruise. Parts of that book are an absolute riot! One of the guys who works for the cruise line saw the title and remarked that elements of the Caribbean are just as they are described in the book even though it's now 40 years since it was written.
Sorry you didn't get a chance to call. Glad you enjoyed your first look even though you got a bit of those LARGE drops! Just remember - rain is good - mostly, as it fills our cisterns! (so you don't have to buy water!)
Thanks Paul. I'm going to try and come down for a few days around Thanksgiving or Chritsmas and do some scouting. Hopefully you guys will have a holiday get together planned for sometime around then. It's always great to put a face with the names.
BTW, my guide seemed especially adamant about pointing out that in 1999, Water Island "officially" became the 4th Virgin Island.
