Moving
I am looking to move to St. crox how is the computer field there and where could I find available jobs there, I am living in Texas at this time and I would like to move there in 3 weeks.
Hello Jamie,
It is difficult to secure employment in the USVI without being here; you can definately research the options, make calls, fax resumes but often times before you hear your hired you need to be seen so that the employer is confident you are actually moving and he/she isn't wasting time with someone who just is thinking about and might get cold feet. Second thing - computer field jobs are hard to come by, there aren't any computer software firms, computer installation and repair is usually done by small business owners - usually just them and one other person, computer sales are in stores like Radio Shack where you would be a regular sales person, computer work for the university is an option in some cases if there is something open, computer teachers in schools if you have a degree, computer work for the government will be lots of red tape. If you are in web design again this is usually some one or two person business teams not big firms.
What do you do in the computer field???
Also there really aren't any web sites with jobs posted for the USVI. Some of the big job sites include a few, the Avis - the St. Croix paper is not online but once on island you could pick up the paper. UVI has a web site at www.uvi.edu you can look and see if there are any computer admin. job openings.
You will more then likely need to save a good bit of money so that you can pay expenses for a few weeks/a couple months while you secure a job.

I am in the netwotking part of the computer field. I teach Computer Networking in a college here in Texas.
How expensive is cost of living, and would it hard to find a place to stay for a few months and what would the sodt range for temp housing.
Jamie,
Take a look at the universities web site for teaching positions, maybe contact them concerning possiable openings for next semester. Computer specific jobs are fairly hard to get here because they don't really exist. Teaching is something you would have good chances of finding work in, more in highschool - junior high rather then college but definately check all the options.
Look in the moving guide on this site - top of this page select moving guide. There is a section in Island Living on the average cost of gas, electricity, groceries... and in the housing section there is a breif table on average rent. Also short term rentals would usally be for a couple weeks to a month... A few months you might just rent an apartment. The housing sectoin of the moving guide discusses this.

Hi Jamie
As Islander mentioned, it won't be easy finding a job right away unless you're lucky. the University of VI recently had a opening in their IT area. I don't know if the position has been filled, but I do know that they were looking at several stateside applicants. They have a campus on St. Croix, but I'm not sure how large an IT staff is over there.
Rita
Thanks, I will give University if VI a call on monday, if you hear of anything else please let me know
