Hello! My boyfriend and I are thinking about moving to the VI's but we are worried about a few things... how hard is it to get an apartment/cottage before we move there, and one the allows for a dog? Is it really humid there? Are things as expensive as islands normally are? Could I survive on a teacher's salary? Thanks, I am sure i will have more for ya' soon! 😉

Yes, no, no,no yes,who cares.....

Lots of questions and the answers are not simple. It would be nice to reassure you that everything will go well on your move... but it won't.

You can find a place to live "this time of year "quite easily...but if you have an animal it will be much harder. In other words, if you come here with your dog in July you might find a place. If you come here with your dog in December you might not find a place.
Humidity...is relative. Yes it is more humid here than Palm Springs, but when the tradewinds blow it cools things down and it is not like Houston, Florida or even the East coast or midwest in the summer. Expensive? A little, but not so much that it can make a difference. Gas is cheaper in St Croix than much of the USA. Imported items cost a bit more, but you learn to pick and choose. Teachers salary? In California you need room mates and helpful parents to live on a teachers salary. In the USVI you won't live like a Senator, but you can find a place and have a nicelife. Hope this helps. Keep looking and asking questions. Try to spend some time here before you move to better understand...

Do you already have a job teaching? Where are you moving from? Cost of living is relative. Lifestyles are different here so my family has ended up spending less money. Produce is more expensive but there is no sales tax or state income tax. Home insurance is more money but auto insurance is less. You wear different clothing so I end up spending less on clothes. I could go on. All depends on where you are moving from and what you are used to.

Plan on spending almost twice of what you do in the states for food.
A bottle of rum is cheaper than a gallon of milk.
As far as living, I heard someone tell me that the cost of living on St. John is equivalent to the cost in New York City(and the pay doesn't come close).
I am not familiar with STT or STX but it is fairly expensive compared to the wages you are likely to make. I am talking about what you get for your dollar. (say that 800 a month gets you much more in most places)
The taxes are cheaper BUT you also get less things. Like less postal service, quality of roads is less, and other federal and local services are cut back or not even here.
All that said, I think I came out about even financially.
