moving
Hello everyone. My brother and I are moving to the virgin islands arriving tomorrow Thursday 31. As we are excited we are also nervous. We are staying at a hostel while looking for housing and jobs. W both have worked in restaurants for a long time so thus is what we are planning to do there. I know i can find job listings as well as housing on the links but i thought to write a message here for word of mouth purposes and to also join this community which seems helpful. If anyone has advise as per which island to go to our if you know of a place we can stay cheaper than 88 n while settling please let me know it will be greatly apciated. Thanks very much to all.
Can't wait!
Didn't know we had a hostel in STT!

STX is much bigger and has a lot more people on it, why would you assume he's talking about STT?
I'm not sure $88 night qualifies as hostel type accomodations.
It is a good time to look for restaurant work -- go get your food Handlers card ASAP for sure.
Get the Island Trader for Apt. info on Thurs morning - if you don't have a 340 phone # keep trying rather than just leave a message and wait for a call back or text when you respond to any ads.
Get a job lined up and start working and getting income before you commit to a living situation if possible - you may not stick with your 1st job but try and get one and network about where to live and transportation options.
Good Luck to you both and enjoy whichever Island you choose.

Why would you assume he's not? Didn't realize STX had a hostel then. Satisfied, LF?
Why isn't he talking about St. John? Craigslist is a great place to start looking for a place to stay. They have numerous listings, anywhere from house to apartment to just rooms to rent. You also need to be careful of scammers on Craigslist though. Ronnie on here ( I can't recall the name of it at the moment, old age sittin in) runs a very nice B&B located downtown on St. Thomas if you are looking at that particular Island. No car would be needed immediately, plus you would be near multiple transportation options and in the center of most of the activity.
Just to correct a misconception, St. Thomas may be smaller in land mass but has a slightly larger population than St. Croix according to the 2010 census and I suspect that the gap has widened a bit since Hovensa closed. I would also bet that St. Thomas has many more restaurant employment opportunities than St. Croix, particularly when considering only those that would consider hiring a state sider.

Thanks very much to everyone all the information is greatly appreciated.
I just wanted to clarify i am a girl lol. Also we honestly just arrived i had done a little research in terms of the islands i have lived in a small island before for the summer and really enjoyed the lay back atmosphere of the isld life. We are not sett on any island yet we want to see all three and decide base on job availability cost of living and ease of transportation. We don't have a car but so far in st Thomas and st Croix everyone says w need a car. And then people have told us st johns is really expensive to live.... If anyone has any thoughts they are welcome and appreciated.

So do you know what island you are on yet?

I suppose they are at Rhoda's Place in Tillet Gardens. Misnamed a B & B but actually a hostel.
At this point in the game you are here at the best time to find work. You can catch a job and get to know the place and then you will be in the position to find out where the best or better jobs are. I am saying this assuming you are in St Thomas. St John has opportunities however costs more to rent. St Croix is cheaper but I really wonder how many job as are available as all we here n St Thomas is how bad things are.
I second Exit about getting the Food Handlers card. You will get a job quicker with it in hand.
Yes Ronnie we are at Rhodas it is very nice and convenient to move around yet a bit expensive since we are paying per night. I wonder if there is somewhere we can stay for a week or something that can be inexpensive. We are getting our health cards tomorrow and headed to st johns to see what's up there.
Thanks again to everyone.

Supposedly unemployment is high on st Croix but I personally know several people that have come in the last couple of years that have gotten work within a week. If you want to work and have good work ethic , you will find a job on st Croix.

You cannot get a Food Handlers card on Sat. at the Hospital.

I just saw the link for this.
Didn't realize they'd turned the old rentals into a hostel.
I think I need to raise my rates after seeing what they charge!
Good luck with the job hunt and the move.

Yes, I also thought the price was a bit high for a bed.
When I was in New Zealand, we traveled around quite a bit when not in staying at our Auckland home base (which cost us $500 per month for a 2 bed/2bath/utilities included - we did have to recycle) and the rates for a semiprivate room in a hostel was exceedingly cheap, something like $12 per nite. $50 per nite was for an exceedingly upscale B&B but this is the VI so guess it's what the market will bear.
Hello, everyone. I have really enjoyed the communication and assistance you have provided to the previous writer. I hope to get some help as well. I am "planning" a move in the Spring of 2014 to one of islands, probably St.Thomas or St. Croix. I have done a lot of reading and research recently. I visited St. Thomas on vacation in 2008, but, spent a lot of time immersed in the culture and in the community so that I could get a real feel for the place. I've wanted to retire there ever since. However, I know a lot can happen in a few years to change things, so I am considering another brief stay in the upcoming months to check things out. Can someone recommend a clean and inexpensive place to stay on either one of those 2 islands while I search the area for housing? I would not mind relocating somewhere near public transportation so I won't need to bring my car. Looking forward to the sun instead of the snow. Help! 😎
Thanks!
BB
Hi Lina,
How are you doing checking out the islands? Hope you're enjoying yourselves. If St. Croix is still in the running.....we have a small apartment complex on STX, and we have a couple of vacancies right now, turn-key equipped, clean and move-in ready. And we can beat the heck out of $88 per night!! We offer both short term and long term rentals, usually 1 month minimum. Our 3 month plan is very popular, and we have residents that have been with us for years. We're pretty flexible on lease terms, so just let us know what you need.
You can check out our website at http://www.virginislandsrentals.com . Please let me know, via PM here or email at casita37@hotmail.com, if you think we might be able to help you.
Enjoy,
HEllo Juanita. Thanks for the information we actually decided to go for St John. we are now in the search for homes there so hopefully something will come up.
Thanks
