moving with older dog

We have been planning a move to St Thomas and bringing our dog, but I've been reading about the stress inflicted on an older dog. Has anyone flown their older dog to the islands? Ours is going on 13 and we don't want to kill her just getting there.

Thanks for any advice.

We'll be in St Thomas the week of May 9th to make pre move arrangements. We plan to move in June.

Dave,

You know that the airlines won't take your 4-legger as luggage between May 15 and September 15, don't you? They will do it as cargo because they can specify an air-conditioned area in the hold, but going cargo is much more expensive.

We know about the airline restrictions, but still wonder if anyone has flown an older dog over. I know we will feel better sending her as cargo in a pressurized environment. Too bad we couldn't get enough pet owners to secure a charter and let the dogs fly with the passengers.

Thanks. We will be there for the week at 340-693-5610. Where are your dogs flying from? We are planning on driving to Florida to ship a car and also to make for a shorter flight for the dog.

Our dogs came down to STX in early February and did fine. The pug is 13 and the lab is 9. I would highly advise if possible to not have a connection. I drove from Tampa to Miami so it would be a direct flighlt to STX. Also, be sure to ask the flight attendant to ask the Captain to let you know if your dog made it on the flight. The point here is to remind the captain that there are indeed dogs on board, and to turn on the heat/oxygen for the forward baggage compartment. Tragedies happen when the captain is not informed by the ground crew.
