Moving with a car
I am looking for some advice and information about getting a car to the islands.
I am not sure I can afford to get a new car there and am making payment on a non-4 wheel drive sedan. I know this isn't the best car for the steep inclines and sometimes bad roads, but I am really not sure of any other way right now-at least till I get established. Does anyone have a clue what going rates are for shipping freight for a normal size car? Does anyone know the rough start up costs associated with registering, licensing and customs cost associated with bringing vehicles there?
I'll try to find previous threads on this but first you have to make sure the lender for your present car will allow you to take the car out of the continental 48. Many won't.
There are plenty of non-4 wheel drive cars here. Check out this thread with info about shipping. Still trying to find the thread about the cost:

Here's one with some info on shipping to STT:

thank you so much for all the info and resources. Lots of thinking to do.
Coraljrh,
You asked about advice on shipping a car and the costs related. And you received good responses on how to find that information.
You also mentioned " at least till I get established". Maybe you could elaborate a little more on that (getting established). A couple of things come to mind such as, what island,Job, housing, family/friends living on the islands. The more questions you ask , the better prepared your going to be to make a decision.
I am moving by the end of November. I have a permanent postion on STJ for the National Park.
I think I have decided to sell my car or possibly trade it in.
I was thinking that even though there would be additional costs with shipping, I would get a better deal on a more suitable vehicle for the steep hills.
Probably a good idea, since you'll be in STJ to get a 4WD.
