Hi Folks,

Well I've said my good bye's in Texas. I'm in Stuart, FL for a day to visit a friend. I checked the GPS yesterday. I've traveled 1200 miles from home in 2 days. Zoomed past Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and a good bit of Florida. Dodged radar from all Tomorrow I hope the packing gods are with me when I arrive at Tropical and they don't have to remove any boxes from my car. And the train/plane god so I make the trirail connection on time. Tomorrow night I'll be in St. Thomas.

Wish me luck.

We did that drive (starting in CA) on our way over here too. It's a nice start to your new chapter in life. Of course, we weren't so lucky dodging the radar (2 tix!)
Good luck and welcome to STT!

I was thinking about driving from CA to FL to ship a car instead of paying to have it shipped from the west coast. What was the drive like Onika?

Congrats on the move TejasTom! Be there myself in July...

So far Lessons Learned:
No matter what Tropical says, bring a copy or original title. I called three times to confirm the letter from the lein holder is all I needed only to find out that I needed 3 notarized copies of title for customs. Beware of this. Also goods inside car are NOT insured, again contrary to what tropical told me numerous times. On the positive side the folks at the receiving yard were more than helpful and did everything they could to help.

Plan for extra time at every airport you pass through security if you have a one way ticket. I was afraid I was going to get strip searched in Miami. Nearly the same process in San Juan.

As always, a good dose of gratitude and praise goes a long way to ease the trip. Very few folks can reject someone being genuinely nice.

So far all is well. The folks here put me to work at the marina first thing Tuesday morning. Today hacking away at websites. Tonight managing the nightly closing of a bar.

Maybe ya'll can come visit out there once I'm a regular fixture.

Take care,
TejasTom

The restaurant/bar is Pirate's Cove Bar and Grill. Right now I'm working on putting in meters, Wednesday night I waited tables and learned how to close out for the night.

Yesterday worked on one of the web sites (new isp coming soon). Then got an urgent call from the owner for a business meeting... on the boat cruising the harbor. Now that is the way to have a meeting.

At some point I'll be down there on a regular basis. Come by and visit... 6186 Estate Frydenhoj in EastEnd.

Hopefully this weekend I'll make a trip to St. John.

Ok, a little over a week later this is what's gone on:

Spent a day boating to Cooper Island, Jost van Dyke, the indians (an out cropping of rocks). Visited the Soggy Dollar and had painkillers. Haven't made it to St. John yet. Maybe this weekend.

Made one minor wrong turn, nearly ended up in oncoming traffic leaving Market Square. Getting to learn the path from where I'm staying to the marina. Only made a couple of wrong turns but quickly realized I was heading the wrong direction (no danger just wouldn't take me where I wanted to go).

Found out how picky some vendors are with regards to "international" shipments. Apparently the U.S. Virgin Islands aren't part of the U.S. on some corporate maps. But as my dad once said, "there is more than one way to skin a cat".

The car should get shipped this week if there is room. Had to wait an extra week for the titles to arrive. Not real happy about the extra $25 a day they are going to charge for storage.

Hopefully this week I'll get a po box, local cell and start working on my permanent residence. Staying with friends kinda bites.

Take care,
Tejas Tom
