moving to vi??
Hi i'm seriously thinking of moving to the islands. I'm leaning more towards st.croix, but i'm not set on that. I'm just looking for any input on the islands, like were's a good place to live, is there lots of crime and why are some of the condos so cheap? How exactly high is the cost of living? I recently graduated from college and I'm an LPN, will I be able to find a job? I have so many questions, I can't write them all. So any, and I mean ANY info would be much appreciated. Thanks- Tanya
I would say your best bet is to order the settler's handbook through this website for $15.95. It sounds like many of your questions would be answered by it. I am moving there in a month or two and it provided me with a lot of info. Hope this helps.
Hello Tanya,
Different people like different areas... I found the east end of St. Croix to be nice... but its also more pricey... just seemed more quiet. There is crime like you would find pretty much everywhere. You should read that topic under the moving guide on this site - there are a couple paragraphs about it under the sub topic island living, there is also an example of rent prices in the housing section. The condos that might be less expensive may be because of the age of the building or the location. For cost of living idea - check out the subtopics housing and cost of living in the moving guide. There is a grocery list there to so you can see what they run. Also nurses are in demand... There is a hospital on St. Croix called the Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center, their website is http://www.jflusvi.org
All the best.

You definately want to visit and explore seriously, first.
If you are considering STT or STX, I would go there....take a week at least between the two islands and soak it in and ask tons of questions.
My personal opinion is that STX has a few issues to deal with as far as crime goes.
Tourism isnt as strong there because of that. Since the economy thrives on tourism, there isnt as much stability as on STT. Even before the cruises pulled out, there were never as many cruises and as much money going around at STX as STT after the hurricane Hugo damaged some of the docking facilities. But obviously make a decision on your own. I live on STJ. I wouldnt live on either island because I am happy where I am. St. John is more expensive and smaller. You don't get as many convienences and what you get costs more. STJ offers very, very few NON service oriented jobs. I would say be careful about picking out a place to live on STT.
Although, St. thomas does have the best beaches, right Ronnie?
(tongue in cheek)
They all have great beaches - I live on St. Thomas. Have only been to St. Croix once. It is larger, flatter than St. Thomas and has a larger bowling alley (LOL). St. Thomas, as said above, has more tourists. Explore each island to decide which one you want. It seems that St. Croix has more of a Spanish influence than St. Thomas.
We just moved to STX two weeks ago. We found a place not far from the north shore. It's out in the country and very quiet. When I trim the bushes we will have a nice view of the ocean as we are way up on a hill. Take the previous advice and visit the islands, not as a vacationer, but look at the things you will need to live. It's a little different here, but not that much. STX has a small town atmosphere. If I can be of any help, just email me with specific questions.
Thanks everyone for your input. I really appreciate it. I bought the settlers handbook and it has been a great help. I'm planning a trip there in the near future to get an idea of the island life. Thanks again Tanya
