moving to usvi with kids
Hello everybody,
I am thrilled to have found this website, and impressed with the generosity of the posters here. My wife and I are licenced Massage therapists in Maine, with 2 kids age 5 and 7. We are exploring the idea of moving to the islands. I am eager to hear from parents ( and children) who have made the move. We are planning a pre move visit and have ordered the "settlers handbook" and several local papers. Anyhow we would love to hear some accounts of family life and any adjustments that happened. I am curios about the schools. I have heard some negative things about the public school system, but no particulars.
From what I have read on the boards here I know this is rather unlikely but if any one wants to hire 2 Massage therapists with 10 years experiance as chefs and 5 years experiance in management (hers in retail, mine in production). I would love to hear from you.
Yes I was also wondering how many children handles the move. Please tell!
Moved to St. Thomas 3 years ago with a 5 year old. She loves it and is doing fantastic. There was an adjustment period as far as her missing her friends and her school back in San Francisco but she would never want to go back.
She goes to Montessori www.vimontessori.org. Went to Montessori in San Francisco so that helped with the adjustment. Email me if you want some more questions answered.
Hello and welcome,
As a licensed massage therapist - you might look at Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort and Spa, other large resorts that might offer this service so could be potential employers - Mariott and Ritz Carlton. Also you might check at the local gyms, some of them offer massage. This is for St. Thomas. Managment positions are also possibilities.

Hi Sean
I moved to St. John 4 weeks ago with my wife and twin daughters (22 months old). Indeed adjusting to island life with kids is challenging, but we keep saying to ourselves that if our kids were older, it would be much easier. So you all should be in good shape.
In terms of school, I understand that Pine Peace is good, and Coral Bay. I have not heard great things about the public schools, to be honest.
There are alot of young families and there is definately a comraderie between parents with kids who recently moved here. When I say recently, I mean within the past 5 years. Many of these parents are very encouraging and helpful in giving advice about adjustiing to life on the islands (St. John in particular) with childern. This includes children older than ours.
You are welcome to email me with additional questions. Overall, I think you should do it!!
Pete
Thank You everyone for your input. We wouldnt be considering a move untill next summer at the earliest, so I am sure I will have a few more questions.
