Moving to STX

We just came back from STX about a week ago. Wile there on vacation we took some time to look at lots. We found one in Little Princess and put a bid in. However, the realtor who list the propperty has trouble finding the owner. I wonder how often this happens.

We are working on a 4-5 year plan. We are hoping this gives us enough time to find a job. We also would like to relocate before our daughter is of school age.

My husband works in the computer field. Pretty much supporting researchers with computer related problems and set ups. He also works miracles recovering lost data.
I believe he oversees aout 500+ computers right now. Mac and Ibm
We hope there is room for a highly skilled computer dude on STX.

I myself do commercial photography. I am working currently on my own cookbook. If all goes well it will be published in May 2004. I am not sure if STX has a use for a talented photographer. We will see.

The lot we are trying to buy is great for gardening. I already have read up on gardening on STX. Finding information is sure a task. I found with enough imagination ond odd searches there is indead information out there. 😉

We welcome tips on how best to go about becoming Islander. We where told that with my husand going to school on STX 17 years ago and us being married on St John that we are practically Islander already. So perhaps a great job will open up for my husband and we can e ack in STX sooner then later.

Wish us luck that the propperty owner will e found.

Thank

Hey Island Paul,

Are you out there? This lady does photography. Any advice?

Iris, I'm sure there are computer jobs here for your husband. If you have the capital, you could set up your own business. It's like anywhere else here. If you can beat the competition, people will flock to you and you can charge a little more.

Here's the phonebook if you want to call around to computer repair companies: www.viphonebook.com.

Yes, the gardening is fantastic here. Zone 11!

Thank you, we do have a phoneook. I hope that all the hotels and restaurant could use a great food photographer. Its a very specialized field. You need to know food inside out. I was a trained chef in the past. I will most likely continue my commercial photography in Stx and broaden my specs to include people photography. I am currently working on a family cookook. I hope that is the first of many.

Because I am already in my own business dh rather would work for a corporation right now. He is a genius in computers. Not just because I say so as his wife. He knows all the plattforms and seem to be able to find problems other computer people can't. I alway say he is wired different from the rest of us. His brain thinks like a computer.

Coming from a teaching background he also has a neck for explaining things to people so they can actually understand what he is talking abaut. He has a masters in Education but due to low pay left that section.

We are talking STX every free minute and are putting down our plans. One thing which will be difficult is getting rid of is stuff. I have a lot of props such as plates and china ware for my business and dh has a selection of old custom computers. Not very practical stuff to move. Good thing is we have not that many furniture. A piano, sofa and dinning set. All the rest is stuff we can buy on Stx. I do wonder if they are giving people a break on bringing in business equipment.

Thanks
Iris

You should check into a tax break for the business equipment. Also, if you will have the windows open a lot at your place, you may need a dehumidifier for inside the piano.

That is good to know about the dehumidifier. I guess I can check the phone book for a piano place on Stx. I think letting the breeze in the house is one of the pleassures of the islands.
Thanks

I searched the phonebook and there does not seem to be a place which services pianos. I wonder does anone know someone who can tune a piano? I am sure I can get a dehuminifier here before we leave. But we still would need the piano to be tuned.
Thanks
Iris

Call up schools and ask to speak to their music teachers... maybe they know of someone who can tune pianos.

You might use the Internet to learn how to do it on your own. One of my brothers taught himself how to tune pianos. You probably just need a tuner and a tool or two you can get at a music store.

Iris,
I have a giant old upright and have been tuning it for years. All you need is a tuning wrench (not sure what it's really called but you could just as well use a deep welled socket with an extension), and a couple of rubber dampeners (again, not sure what they're called but they're flat, triangular looking with a wire handle and you jam them between the strings you're not tuning on to keep them silent while you work on the other one). Music stores, or the internet should fix you up. Just be sure when you start cranking on those strings to DO IT VERY SLOWLY or you'll be playing a different tune for awhile. Good luck!
