Moving to STX
My family and I are moving to St. Croix soon and wanted to know if anyone could tell me about the West End? We have visited St. Croix many times in the past 4 years and stayed at the Pelican Cove Villas and Mill Harbor. I'm familiar with that area, but not West End.
I personally don't care for the West end. It seems a little seedy.
That said, of my many friends who live there love it and would not live anywhere else.
West is very nice, its just far out of the way.... and then theres the issue of all the crime in Fredericksted...
You can't really pigeonhole the west end as much as you can the east end. Too many different areas with completely different vibes. Is there a particular "area" you are wanting to know about? Are you thinking of buying or signing a long term lease? If you have some specific questions, we might be able to help more.
Fewer people live where there is less rain. Less people, just statistically means less crime. Maybe paying for water would be better than paying for your stuff a few times over.
I've lived West for 8+ years...the crime there is no worse than anywhere else on the island. Yes there were a few shootings in Frederiksted the past few months, but there are also shootings, stabbings etc etc out east in Christiansted too. Property crime stats are probably pretty even across the whole island. There are some great areas west, there are some not great areas, just like the rest of the island. I honestly feel much safer in frederiksted at night than c'sted or north shore, but I know the area and the people better. This is all just my opinion...everyone feels differently about each part of the island...you really need to live here a while or visit alot to get your own feel for things.
I believe it is called Long Point Bay.
Thank you
Long Point is west end south shore. Very secluded. Have you been there?
No, we've always stayed in Christiansted. Would you recommend living there?
What will you be doing everyday? Are you going to work? Where? A lot of people look at the size of the island and think it's a breeze to travel the island after commuting for many miles back home. Believe me, in very short order, the distance you drive for daily chores will start to become more of an issue to you.
I'm not really picturing Long Point's location, but it's a long way from the southwest end of the island to almost everything. And that may be perfect for you. Just depends.....
Long Point is not Westend, it is "south shore". I have a friend who lives way out Long Point. Very secluded and they like it that way.
"Westend" is an old name that goes back two centuries describing Frederiksted and surrounding.
St Croix has many micro climates due to the winds, hills/terrain, and onshore/offshore breeze effects.
The Westend hill gets cloud cover and rain more than just about any other place on the island because that's where the "caterpillar cloud" that piles up across the island tends to drop its business late afternoon.
I agree with Juanita, driving distances can be a bummer if you're located far from where you work/school.
And it's not just the distance. I admit I've become a bit of a baby about traveling our roads. I hate them!!! Even going through downtown Christiansted, on Company St., I feel like I've been beat up because of the horrible road conditions.
So apparently you drive on Drunken Goat Road* too? Huh? 🙂
*Drunken Goat Road is the name for the abomination also known as the west end of Midland Road that goes past the goat farm and Frontline bar, down the hill and then winds through the rest of the goat farm until it comes out at the Episcopal church by 669. Originally named "Goat Road" by my children because the goats were invariably loose on the road, the presence now of an extreme number of potholes and uneven pavement make it IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE STRAIGHT. Hence, the name "drunken". In fact, we joke that if you see someone driving straight on this stretch of road, then they are probably drunk.
If they aren't going to fix this road, they need to put a rest stop at each end so people have a place to empty their bladders after the jarring-and-extreme-weaving one must endure. If there's a WORSE ROAD on the island, that's also a major connecting artery, I haven't seen it. It's a freakin joke.
Have to agree with you Neil, on that road. Now that Mahogany has been paved, it definitely qualifies as the worst on island. My wife and I always marvel (and not in a good way) how the road suddenly goes from nice to horrendous. Does anyone know why it does that at that particular spot? Did someone who lives on that stretch honk off a politician and now is condemned to forever live on the worst road on STX?
Bernie
We visited a home at long point a while ago, it was and may still be for sale. There was a reason the owner had a number of German shepherd dogs behind his fence/walls. Said several of his dogs had been poisoned as well. But some folks love living there.

Other than "neglect" ? :S
It's marshy land which probably never had a proper roadbed laid in it. The road goes down hill and across a natural drainage area (what 250 yrs ago would have been a creek or small river before the plantations screwed up the land and watercourses). I'm told that Midland Road used to be completely awful as well until it was rebuilt in 2007-08. Why they stopped at the goat farm is anybody's guess.
