Moving to STX June 13

Here I am, throwing myself on your mercy. My husband will accept a job as a pharmacist on STX tomorrow morning. We will arrive on the island on June 13. He can temporarily stay at The Waves or Pink Fancy; however, we are searching for pet-friendly housing to settle him in as quickly as possible, preferably mostly unfurnished....we have to have some of our "stuff" to feel we are at home. We have no idea where to look - a view would be wonderful, even if the water is miles away! We are not wealthy enough for the East End, that's for sure... We are from west Central Arkansas, so hills and valleys are great. He will be working mid-island; we have done some research on the area toward Cane Bay but are unsure as to travel time, if the public transportation runs there (and how long it would take to circle back to Sunny Isle). Yep, you got it - we know basically nothing. I will be staying for 10-14 days, then returning to Arkansas to close everything down and sell the house. If anyone has anything coming available around that time, or knows anyone that might, please contact me. We really are very simple homebodies who don't require a lot out of life - employment is secure and we have been given a relocation allowance...now for the big reality check as we look for housing over the internet! Any suggestions, comments, ideas, gratefully accepted! It's just myself and my husband, no children involved other than the canines.

Where is he working? I might know of a 2BR, 1 bath near where I live on the northwest end of the island.

BeckyR-- I wouldn't rely on public transportation on STX. Buses are in town but rarly go out. STX has a few major roads but mostly they are hilly and winding. Not many people on the roads at one time, especially at night outside of town. Husband works in Sunny Isle..I don't recomend the apartments across the street from there. (Bay Gardens and Orange Grove Apartments) Bad neighborhood. Luckily you are mid-island and wouldnt have to travel that far. Sorry, no info on housing. Still looking myself. Thought it would be better to stay away from the condos as they are overpriced for what you get. Instead i'm looking at the classifieds for private rentals. They are willing to give a fair price and yes, even on the East End. Carambola area (middle of the West End) area is nice too but expensive. Cane Bay area (slightly north of Carambola) is good too. Though I don't know how the prices are. Try to stay away from the town of Frederiksted as it has become a ghost town and a bad area since the cruise ships stopped coming there. That may change soon next year as they have redone the pier around this time last year. Hope this helps.

Becky,
Congratulations!
99% of rentals come furnished... and the owner is not interested in "unfurnishing" it, for obvious reasons. We brought all our "stuff" because we had it with us in Trinidad, where unfurnished rentals are more common. We are paying for a storage unit to keep the owner's "stuff" in. Don't commit to what you're bringing until you make the trip and look at some places, if you can.
The area Ric referred to would be an easy commute, but public transportation isn't a good option. Budget and Hertz often have cars for sale below blue book with less than 30k miles, although fall is the best time for that. Pentagon Federal Credit Union will finance cars here at half the interest the local banks charge. Their membership rules are pretty liberal.
Good Luck!
Eric

Aimee, thank you - you give me hope!

No condo would take us - my dogs are bigger than a breadbox.

Would someone comment on the revitalization of F'sted? I see some links and info on the internet. We have tended to buy in the areas that were "up and coming" in the past and have done well with that theory, but this is a whole new ball game. I would assume F'sted is too far from Sunny Isle anyway, but I certainly would not want to be anywhere that I didn't feel comfortable. I've researched this board (thank you all!) under every key word I can think of - still dredging up info. I guess I was under the impression this was a better time to look for housing than later in the year. Am I confused (again?)

Cleric, thank you - we will be bringing one Jeep with us - my husband would love to live without two cars to maintain, but I'm just letting him dream on right now! I hadn't thought of the rental places to buy from - a definite option I am very comfortable with. I don't need much more than a tin can to get me around. As long as you mentioned cars, though - do you get a better deal if you pay cash?

Okay, so I wasn't listening well! My husband will be working at Sunshine Mall in F'sted. Still on the searh for a pet-friendly cottage avail. 6/13 or somewhere around there. Thanks, Ric, for your help - the one you mentioned is already gone. If anyone knows of a small 2 BR toward the west end in a nice safe area, please let us know!
