Moving to STT in July
A friend and I will be moving to STT at the end of July. We are looking for a 2 bedroom apartment or house that is around $1200 - $1500/month. We are going to be staying in a hotel for about 5 days and we are going to be renting a car to get around. I have seen a lot of places in the Island Trader that are in our price range. We are considering calling a real estate agent to show us some rentals?Hopefully we will be able to find a place in the time period that we are in the hotel.
I will be going to UVI as a full time student, and I will have a car for transportation.
Does anyone have any suggestions on good areas to live?
We would prefer to live in an area where there are other students or people around our age. We are both 23 years old and want to find some fun areas with bars and such.
Also does anyone have any suggestions on getting a job on STT?
I have a lot of experience in the restaurant/bar business, but I would really like to get a job on a day sail charter as a first mate or crew member. I am also working on getting my PADI instructor permit so I would like to work for a dive company.
Do charter and dive companies hire people often?
I have heard that Red Hook is the best area to find restaurant and bar jobs and also a pretty fun place to party? I have been to STT a couple times and had a good time on the East End. The only problem with living in Red Hook is that it is far from UVI, but I will have a car.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Island trader is good for apts/condos so is this place: http://caribbean.craigslist.org/apa/
Red Hook is on the East end of the Island...UVI is by the airport on the other side of the island...West End
If gas price doesn't bother you, then the ride across the island daily could be lovely.

Don't forget traffic and wasted time. It would make more sense to live on the west end and go to RH when you have time for fun.
Greg~
Do NOT rent sight unseen first of all. Island Trader is a good place to start, however you will see tons of signs posted along the streets for rentals, just simply pull over and call. I was down 3 weeks ago looking for a Northside house at first it can be very frustrating but keep with it, eventually you will find what you are looking for.
Good Luck and bring lots of extra cash!
QueenofdeRock, dntw8up, and Cheryl,
Thank you for the advise. I appreciate all the help I can get. I am living in a big city right now so I know it is going to be a whole lot different.
I am still curious?
Is there a area where most students or younger people live,or is it pretty spread out?
Do day sail charter and dive companies hire people often?
And
I was considering living on the north or south side of the Island so I would be in between town and Red Hook, does that seem like a good idea?
Thanks Again
Greg
That's not a bad idea to live north or south but definitely don't move to the Red Hook area. If you live north you can go to Red Hook without the traffic hassles. It's spread out as to where the younger crowd lives as there really isn't much in the way of apartment complexes. Red Hook isn't the only party area. Havensight & Frenchtown get a little lively as well and there's Greenhouse downtown. Wherever you decide to party, be responsible & keep your wits about you. Good luck & also check the Classified forum on this site (click on Forum list up at the top.)
Greg: There are a lot of students in Bonne Resolution and also on the northside (quick commute.) You are young, the travel time won't bother you. But if you have early classes, you will want to be close to campus! 😉 You really do want to see anything you might live in- even if you are a guy! 😀
Students work for day boats all the time!
Greg,
The daysail boats and dive companies are always hiring for season, but since you are coming in July, it might be a while before things start to gear up. Same with the restaurants. Business if off this year, and tourist numbers are down, so it may not be as easy as it would have been a couple of years ago to find a job as soon as you arrive.
The only areas that won't have heavy traffic are west. North isn't too horrible, but south is a bear, and Red Hook is really too far. Not much nightlife out west, but if you don't go too far out, downtown will still be convenient.
islandlola, who is a poster on here, has a couple of apartments in Mafolie. That would be a good location, a little north, right above town and right around the corner from Sibs, a great little hangout type bar/restaurant..
Good luck to you!
South isn't a bear & hasn't been for the past several months since the road reconstruction near Havensight but agree that Mafolie would be good.
Guess I need to get over to St. Thomas more often. Didn't know the reconstruction was complete. Sorely needed! That has to make a big difference for people on the southside.

Still not done going to Rapune hill.
Some peoples term mortgages may be over before itsdone!
Seriously,I hear it could be another year!
But what do I know?
It's not complete but it's not a bad commute to town at all now. Used to be the back-up would go beyond Donkey Hill but now it never slows up until Havensight with the taxis turning in, then it moves again just fine.
True Trade, it does move in the south side to downtown now.(except for the dam taxis) as you said.
there are 2 lanes going west now.
Juanita mentioned Mafolie. That's where I lived for a while. Check it out. No problem getting into town. And easy commute to UVI; you're going west when others are coming east.
Wherever young people live on the island, they will find their way to downtown. There you will "find some fun areas with bars and such."
What are utility costs? How much should we expecet to pay for cable and internet?
Thanks again, '
Greg
At the top of this page under "Costs" you will find the cost of cable, Internet service and electricity. Alternatively you can follow this link: https://www.vimovingcenter.com/cost_of_living/
everyone only talks about cable, does Directv or Dish work in STT?
Greg: You are going to be too busy with homework to worry about that!! 😀
Never too busy for the Nuggets or the Broncos;)
There is satellite tv here. Friends who have it need two different sized dishes, which they had to buy. If you search this site you should find discussions on this topic.
