Moving to STJ in 3 weeks
Hello all!
I just discovered your message board this evening and I am overwhelmed at the closeness of this community. I have been doing the 9 to 5 in software sales fot the last five years and I feel that after succeeding in this business and the downfall of the Tech Revolution, the mighty winds are changing direction. I have a colleague from the States that lives on STJ now and has seen the unhappiness in my life as of lately. What better way to cure those blues than to decompress on the rock for a while. I grew up in a small town close to the coast of North Carolina and am used to the slower pace of life. Not including brief stops in DC and Phoenix. I will be staying with my colleague for awhile until I can find my own place on STJ. I have a few leads on Bartending jobs that will become vacant later in Sept. She knows almost everyone on the island and I feel my transition will be a little easier than most. I hope it will:)
I hope you guys can answer a few impending questions that I have so I can get a different point of view from y'all. I will be taking three suitcases down with cloths and Misc.. Some items I question taking are jeans, long sleave dress shirts, and slacks???
Also, what about types of hats and shoes. Not bringing or shipping furniture. Going to pick up those items on a needed basis. Agh what should I pack?Again just looking for a different point of view.
Are there any spots to maybe catch a football game this winter and which places if any are good to watch a game on Sat or Sun on STJ. I really am looking for some emotional support bc I am nervous. But I need a life of my own and I think this will be the greatest time in my life. I am 29 and single with no kids. Nothing is holding me back in the States. Live on the edge and life will be greater huh. No regrets. I hope you welcome me with the kindness you have shown other people looking to jump over the fence and experience what you felt like 3 weeks out. I look forward to your replies:)
Hope to see you all with a giddy and purposeful smile on my face.
V
Hello Vaughan,
Welcome to the board. We do get to know each other on this board so feel free to tell us about your move and what you discover. As far as clothing, well I don't know about jeans -maybe someone else will have ideas. I do recommend slacks and dress shirts especially cotton. Long sleeves not so much, but my husband wears slacks and dress shirts most days to work, but then again he does work in air conditioning. St. John is a great place. The prices of rentals usually run higher than St. Thomas so a few people do work on St. John, but live on St. Thomas. Not a bad commute. I wish you luck on your endevors. 😉

Hello Vaughan,
Welcome to the board. Bring a few jeans... while it may seem to hot to wear jeans that is exactly what folks tend to wear when they go out to bars at night... jeans and a t-shirt or jeans and a polo shirt or shorts and a t-shirt ... and sandals or sneakers. Bring a few cotton long sleeve shirts for possiable interviews, office jobs, nice dinners. Polo shirts and slacks should also be packed for work and going out to dinner. Bring some t-shirts and shorts (dress shorts, beach shorts, swim trunks). No need for sweaters, sweat pants/shirts, or any fall & winter weather gear. Hats - baseball caps are fine. Shoes - dress shoes, sneakers, sandals.
You might read some of the What to Expect stories on this web site. All the best!!

Hi Vaughn!!
My husband and I, plus a friend of ours, arrive August 30th from Georgia. Talk about a transition!! We're all in the service industry, so our paths are bound to cross. Congrats on your decision to move!! I'm so excited and nervous and just READY TO GO!!! I've learned a lot from this website and had considered at one time to live on STT insted of StJ because I got very discouraged. But after talking to a friend of mine who lived on STJ, we stuck with our original decission. My husband and I both have leads on jobs and a great lead on an apartment, so we're happy!! But you're really lucky to have a friend to stay with for a while.
To answer your question about where to go to watch the game??? We spent almost everynight of our honeymoon at Woody's watching the playoffs to the World Series!!! It sounds pretty dorky, but we had a BLAST!! I even e-mailed my resume to them not too long ago!! And everyone I know that's been to STJ know Woody's!! Hahahaha
Not too many of the folks that belong to our message board community inquire about STJ, it's mostly STX or STT, so we can be STJ pals!! We've been researching our move for over a year, so if you want to e-mail me directly, it's millermandy@yahoo.com
Good Luck, V, and I'm sure I'll meet you at some point.
CHEERS!!!
Amanda
