Contact the ferry services for the current requirements for pets on board, as they do change. I assume you will be coming from the airport with him in a crate; I know for sure you can take him on any ferry if he is crated. The easier thing, though, would be to rent a car and take him on the car barge. Otherwise you will have to hire a private taxi to get him to Red Hook (at least $55-ish plus tip), or pay to hire out an entire taxi at the airport, which if memory serves is around $95.

Finding a STJ rental that will take a dog is extremely difficult from off island. Arrange for a place where he can stay with you for at least a week while you are looking. There are some pet-friendly hotels on STT, not sure if any of the STJ inns allow pets. If you don't know anybody who is on island that can help you, you'll just have to do a lot of networking when you arrive. Good luck!

FDR is right. It will not be easy to secure long term living space for you and your dog before you arrive. Shouldn't be too much of a problem once you are here. The Westin is now "dog friendly" and may be an option for a week while you look. Try contacting the Cruz Bay Boutique Hotel. The owners are "dog people" and may be able to help. Check out VRBO as well. There is one listing "Coral Breeze" that we stayed in with our 3 dogs while we were waiting to move. None of them are "cheap" options, but then again, nothing here is!
