My wife and I have plans of moving to the islands next Sept. Here are a few questions that we have. We both are recent graduates and have a 2 year old daughter and a 1 year old son. Being that we are just starting our careers we don't have as much money as we would like. The first question is are the apartment complexes safe? We have a little over $10k saved up and would like to know will that be enough for an apartment (security deposit) permits and so forth. We have a 93 plymouth voyager in excellent condition for the year. We would like to know if it would make more sense to ship it down or buy a car once we get to STX.

Hello DF,

Particularly because you have children I would say research this very well... a premove visit if you haven't had one already to check things out. Do you have work lined up? Apartment complexes being safe - well completely depends on the neighborhood but also keep in mind there aren't any apartment complexes like those in the US - large area, several stories, identical apartments, management office, parking spots assigned... you can get this sort of thing out of a condo and then you have apartments as part of a larger house. There are a few apartment buildings... and for all the apartment types the safety level depends on location.

The car ship or buy deal goes back and forth - there are a few threads on this. Some think skip the hassle buy here when you get here others think ship it if its worth the fees and taxes. Do a search for the other threads on this topic.

All the best.
