My husband and I have planned a 4 month pre-move trip Oct 2005 for the IN season. We currently own 2 retail clothing/gift stores in Asheville NC and are interested in finding out if it's possible to open a store similiar to ours in the main shopping near the docks on STT. If anyone has any info on renting a temporary spot just for the 2005-2006 season, we would greatly appreciate it. We want to establish some contacts before we make the move and hopefully find a location to check out the potential for a more permanent move.

Thank you so much,
Randi

Hello Randi,

You should contact the Havensight Merchant Association, Port of Sale and Buccaneer Mall management offices and question availability, waiting list & how long they are, deposits and rent.

You might also contact the folks at Yacht Haven for the future (they are in the construction process but have a rental space management team/pr people).

Hello Islander,
Thanks so much...since my posting, I did call Buccaneer and they had availability now for this season. I'm going to research it further, though. Where's Yacht Haven being built? As a local, In your opinion, what area gets the most traffic, Main St, Royal Dane, Buccaneer, Vendor's Market or Havensight ? When we were there in February, it felt like to us that Main St was the best. One of the shop owners in Royal Dane told us that some folks have pretty extended leases there on Main but she still was encouraging.
Anyway, I appreciate your time and I hope you have a good night.

As I understand, you are looking for a temporary place? Usually the leases are for several years. You might be able to sub-lease, but probably not at any of the places you named. While people talk about season and off-season, the retail business goes on...slowly at times...September is pretty quiet around here.

thanks that's good to know.

As far as the temp place?...right now our plan is to have a seasonal shop in the winter ( slow here-busy there) to start out, have a short term lease possibly re-signing every year in the same location and going through a couple seasons to check out the areas.

Here in our slow season we do mall carts (kiosks) to supplement, so we are familiar with short term leasing in malls, but we'd much rather be experiencing our winters in VI.

Now that's just one possibility...we're looking at options and that's the 'perfect' scenario...but we're pretty flexible folks.

We just fell in love with VI and we're trying to figure out a way to be there year round....

There is a commercial place for rent in Buccaneer Mall. Just walked by it today. Next door to Radio Shack and Subway across the street from Havensight. Used to be a clothing boutique.
