Moving quickly. . . need help
I am moving to St. Thomas the first week of May with a friend of mine. We are moving very spontaneously, but are confident. I already have a job with Home Depot, but could use some advice.
Is it really better to bring my car? I can bring either a 1991 Nissan sedan style, or a 2000 Ford Taurus wagon. Would one be much better than the other?
Also, my friend is brittish, so he won't be able to work legally. Is there much cash in hand work?
We are also looking to find a house before we get there. A studio or one bedroom would be great. Any suggessions or reccommends?
Thanks.
Hello Nick,
Having a car makes getting around, enjoying the island... much more convinient and is just easier. You can make do without one if you live close to work and/or close to the bus route. Perhaps consider selling one of your cars and buying one on island. This way you avoid paying the shipping costs, personal tax, road tax and other fees.
There are under the table paying jobs around. I don't know how many or how you go about approaching the topic when interviewing or seeking work.
Its tough to find an apartment without being on island. There have been a couple apartment available posts on the board in the last few days. You can also check the classifieds in the newspapers. You could try a realtor.
Good Luck.

Definitley sell them and buy one here. Soooo much easier...and faster, too.
As Islander said, it's kinda hard to get an apartment without being on island. Get a room at Pirate's Cove or Midtown Guesthouse or something like that for a couple weeks. I think Midtown is only $400/week.
I know some people frokm other countries that work here. Maybe they have work Visas?
I know people who've worked here without working visas but strongly advise against it. The penalties for both the employer and the employee are very high and your friend runs a high risk of deportation if caught. Most of the casual, under-the-table jobs are in the hospitality industry and anyone working with food or liquor needs a Health Card whic you cannot get without proof of citizenship.
